Sunday-Monday: windy today, hot tomorrow!

Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Statement on Racial Justice

Black Lives Matter. I say that with no reservations and no caveats, and I stand with Black, indigenous, and other people of color against structural racism, against mass incarceration, against police violence, against unequal treatment, against outright racism, and against any other sorts of targeted behaviors or systems.

I pledge to speak out against racism, and I pledge to be a humble ally who is willing to look at the ways that I benefit personally from racist structures in this society. I will continue to speak up and help wake up others, and I will listen quietly when people of color need me to.

I ask that all of you also reflect on the ways you benefit from racist societal structures. I recommend reading “White Fragility” and “How to be an Anti-Racist”. Don’t have much time? Read “Unpacking the Knapsack of White Privilege”. Watch the movie “13th”. When others confront you about your racism, take a deep breath, listen quietly, and attempt to quell your natural defensiveness. We have been raised in a society founded on slavery and racism. These values (and yes, some people hold them as values) remain entrenched in our society in subtle and not-so subtle ways. I challenge you to learn to see them so that you can learn to undo them. We can’t undo the damage that’s been done, and we don’t have the right to ask for forgiveness, but we can work to create a more equitable world going forward.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation. Non-essential travel is still being strongly discouraged in ALL jurisdictions. Land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. Please follow the directions of your local government officials and help keep the Gorge community safe. Thank you!

Today’s the windiest day you’ll find out of the next three; next chance for something more than “light” wind arrives on Wednesday after a couple of hot, light wind days. At this point, it appears we’ll have several days of westerlies starting Wednesday as the right kind of high pressure sets up offshore.

For Sunday, we’ll be post-frontal in the morning. Setting aside the details, that means we’ll see westerlies at 11-14 or so all the way from Stevenson to Arlington along with little fluffy clouds in the western Gorge. Expect those clouds to burn off this afternoon, allowing the wind to build. Offshore high pressure will have a positive tilt to it, resulting in northerly upper flow. This leads to gusty conditions on the river, most likely. That said, we should see a steady build to 24-27 today from Stevenson to The Dalles with 15-18 near Rufus. This setup tends to level the wind speeds between Viento and Hood River (with perhaps lesser wind at Swell), for decent downwinding conditions. River flow, however, is 270kcfs. Eat your Wheaties or down a can of spinach before you go. River temp: 59 degrees.

High pressure pushes inland on Monday, but there should be enough power from the offshore high to keep light westerlies going in the far western Gorge. Expect 9-12 to start the day from Multnomah Falls to Swell. Hood River will likely be 5-8 or less, and the wind will be calm or light east of there. We’ll most likely see the wind drop midday and then rise to 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River with calm wind east of there.

Tuesday starts out calm, possibly with light easterlies. Late in the afternoon, a weather system pushes towards the coast. Marine air starts to filter in to the western half of the state. If the timing works out, we’ll see the wind build to 20-23 form Stevenson to The Dalles after 5pm (15-18 is possible between 2pm and 5pm). Wednesday looks like 26-29. Models don’t yet agree on the next several days after that, but the operational GFS is setting us up for strong wind Friday and Saturday. Fingers crossed!
