Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Light snowfall on Mt. Hood on Wednesday gives way to heavier snowfall Thursday, light snowfall Friday, and sunshine for the weekend. There’s a bit of a monkey wrench possible on Wednesday; read on for the details.
So, Wednesday. A system comes in from the south bringing light precipitation. 5000′ temps with this system rise to 2°. However, deep cold air in place may protect Mt. Hood from a precip type change. Apparent snow level: 0′ rising to 500′ in the afternoon and falling to 0′ overnight near Mt. Hood. We’ll see 0.1-0.2” water value (WV) during the day, probably as dense snow, possibly with a period of freezing rain. Another 0.3” WV falls tonight with colder air, for 3-4” of powder. Wind will be SW 15 during the day, SWS 25 in the evening, and W 30 after midnight.
Thursday looks quite snowy as westerly wind enhances orographic snowfall. The snow level will be 0′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. Precip: 0.6” WV during the day, for 6-7” of powder. Another 0.4” WV falls overnight, for another 4-5” of fluffy pow. Wind will be W 30 during the day, W 20 in the afternoon, and NW 25 overnight.
Friday sees lingering orographic flurries on and off during the day and evening. The snow level will be 0′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 0′ overnight. A trace to an inch of new snow falls during the daytime 12 hours, and another inch or so falls overnight. Wind will be NW 20 all day and SW 5-10 after midnight. Saturday and Sunday both look sunny and dry with the freezing level at 0′ near Mt. Hood. Mountain temps will be in the 20’s – slightly warmer Sunday than Saturday.
Gorge Wind
East wind keeps on cracking for most of Wednesday. Morning wind will be 40-45 near Rooster and 30-35 near Stevenson. The wind will fade to 10-15 near Stevenson and light easterly near Rooster by 4pm. After 7pm, we’ll see a switch to west 5-10 through at least the western Gorge to Mosier. River flow is 132kcfs and temp is 35 degrees. Thursday starts out with light east wind and turns to light west wind. Friday starts with light westerly and picks up to 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier due to offshore high pressure.
JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Another round of snow arrives Thursday around 4am. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and near 40 in the afternoon (maybe – I think low to mid 30’s is more likely). Friday starts out with scattered flurries under mostly cloudy sky and ends with scattered sprinkles under partly cloudy sky. Temps will be in the upper 20’s early and upper 30’s to low 40’s later. Road and Mountain Biking
Silly rabbit… it’s not biking season in the Gorge. It’s XC skiing and BC skiing season! And Gorge Backcountry skiing. Remember, avalanche hazard does exist in the Gorge too. Be safe, and be wise in your decision making. Dig pits. Avoid wind-loaded steep slopes.
