Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Light snowfall on Friday gives way to sunshine in the afternoon. Saturday looks sunny. Easterly orographic clouds will probably move in on Sunday along with colder temps. Next chance of significant snowfall isn’t until next week. That said, temps will stay cold enough to keep the snow in packed powder condition for several days, with skier traffic slowly moving the snowpack towards hardpack on the groom.

For Friday, we’ll have light snow in the morning and clear sky in the afternoon and overnight. The snow level near Mt. Hood will be 0′. Mountain temps will be in the low 20’s early and mid to upper 20’s in the afternoon. Wind: SW 10 early, NW 10 in the afternoon, and light and variable overnight.

Saturday looks sunny. The free air freezing level (FAF) near Mt. Hood will be 0′. Mountain temps will be in the teens to low 20’s. Wind: light and variable during the day, becoming E 10 overnight. Sunday will probably be partly cloudy due to easterly orographic clouds. Highest lifts will likely be in the sun. Free air freezing level: 0′. Temps: upper single digits to low double digits. Wind: E 10 early, NE 5 in the afternoon, and E 5 overnight. While that’s usually considered “light and variable”, the direction signifies that cold air will be pouring in from the east side.

Looking longer range, we have dry weather Monday and Tuesday. Models disagree on the next system, currently slated for Tuesday night into Wednesday. The GFS keeps it way too far south. The Euro brings it far enough north for a few inches of snow. The Euro has been handling this setup better, so I’m leaning towards some snow on Wednesday. If not, the next system arrives from the NW on Thursday with moderate snowfall. All that said, the snow is fantastic right now. Get out and enjoy it!

River flow is 121kcfs and temp is 35 degrees. Saturday starts with 35-40 near Rooster and 30-35 near Stevenson. Afternoon wind: 40-50mph near Rooster, 30-35 at Steven’s locks, and windy in the metro area too. Sunday morning: 40-50 near Rooster, 30-35 near Stevenson, 20-25 near Viento, and 15-20 in the metro area. The wind backs off to 25-30 at Rooster and Stevenson in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

Silly rabbit… it’s not biking season in the Gorge. It’s XC skiing and BC skiing season! And Gorge Backcountry skiing. Remember, avalanche hazard does exist in the Gorge too. Be safe, and be wise in your decision making. Dig pits. Avoid wind-loaded steep slopes.

Upcoming Events

At 7am on Friday, there’s the Kickstand Coffee Run, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a free cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a by-donation yoga class at Yoga Samadhi at 4:15 on Friday afternoons. Because of the snowy roads and trails, the Cold Lap on Saturday afternoon is canceled. It will be replaced by a showing of Filmed By Bike at Dirty Fingers at 3pm.
