Gorge Wind Forecast

Happy cloudy Saturday morning! The general weather pattern has undergone quite a shift over the last 24 hours or so. A low pressure system stalled north of Vancouver Island will slowly drift southward over the next five days. Embedded within that system are several fronts and waves and weather thingies that will swing through the Northwest. Translation into windspeak: we’ll see gusty, unreliable westerlies for the next few days along with an increase in clouds and sprinkle chances.

For Saturday, we start (late, because I slept in) with gradients of .06 and .04 and wind speeds bouncing around between 10 and 20 through the entire Gorge. Areas west of Mosier will stay cloudy today, with gusty westerlies at 10-20. Viento’s the exception; it could hover around 17-21. As this morning cold front swings through and high pressure builds in behind (briefly), the wind should pick up to 21-24 from Lyle to Arlington with 24-27 late afternoon from Lyle to Doug’s.

Sunday starts with high pressure and sees another cold front approach during the second half of the day. This starts us with light morning westerlies at 5-10 or less. Afternoon wind looks like gusty, unreliable 20-23 from Stevenson to The Dalles.

That second cold front swings through on Monday morning. The day starts cloudy in most places with sprinkles in the western Gorge. Wind speeds will be 5-10 most places with 12-15 near Arlington. Afternoon westerlies build to 19-22 from Rowena to Arlington (maybe 21-24) and stay at 7-10 in the west. Models disagree on the path of the southward-moving low pressure system mentioned in the first paragraph. That means the wind forecast is much less clear after Monday. Let’s just say that strong westerlies are unlikely with this setup and leave it at that.

BONUS: Jones Saturday: no. Sunday: nope. Monday: 7-10. Sauvie’s Saturday: 12-15 late. Sunday: no. Monday: nada. Coast (north/central/south). Saturday: no/no/10-15, W swell 3′ at 7 seconds. Sunday: W15-20/W5-10/no, W 5′ @ 8. Monday: S 10-15/W5/N 5-10, W 6′ @ 10.
