Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Friday, and the next week or so will be affected by a series of low pressure systems moving into BC. The path of those system will slowly drop southward, leading to increasing clouds and rain chances for the Gorge next week. This setup will keep the west wind flowing, but it will also make the wind difficult to predict and up-and-down on the river. That’s fall for you!
For Friday, First Friday no less, an approaching front in the afternoon will help keep the west cooler than the east. Fronts tend to make the wind unreliable, lighter than model prediction, and also inconsistent. Sounds delightful, eh? That said, we started with gradients of .08 and .03, and those will increase, especially late this afternoon. For the morning, we’ll have 5-10 in the far west, 15-18 from Viento to Swell, and 10-13 everywhere else. Westerlies build to gusty 20-23 midday from Stevenson to The Dalles. It’s likely we’ll see a short burst of 24-28 late this afternoon, or perhaps early evening, from Stevenson to Rufus. Swell probably won’t benefit from this, but you never know!
Saturday sees that frontal system depart as high pressure fills into the PNW. We’ll have clouds and possible sprinkles in the western Gorge through mid-morning. Wind will be 5-10 under the clouds and 12-15 east of Mosier to start the day. Afternoon westerlies will probably be hampered by clouds in the west; let’s call it 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River with 18-22 east of Mosier. The other model’s a bit more robust, calling for 22-25 from Mosier to Rufus.
Sunday starts out calm and ends up windy as a frontal system approaches late in the day. Models give the western Gorge, all the way to Hood River, a shot at sprinkles and/or rain late Sunday afternoon. The day starts with light westerlies everywhere, with calm conditions scattered about. Stevenson to Avery picks up to 18-22 by early afternoon with 22-25 possible after 5pm from Viento to Rufus. Swell probably won’t be as strong as other places, and given the setup, the wind will likely be inconsistent. Models disagree on wind strength and the extent of rain next week, so we’ll just have to wait and see how things coalesce…
