Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Labour Day morning, and it was windy enough at dawn that the Cross Channel swimmers were disappointed by a cancellation of the event. The morning westerlies look to continue all day on Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday look like easterly days, and then the westerlies return on Thursday.

Hopefully your labors today will be limited to those on the water. It’s looking like a great day for ALL the watersports except the zero-wind sports. Morning gradients were .11 and .01. Flow is quite low this morning, making for an easy downwinder: 82,500cfs. We’ll have westerlies at 21-24 this morning from Viento to Mosier. A brief mid-morning bump to 24-27 is possible. Afternoon wind looks like 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 10-13ish (or less) farther east. River temp is 67 degrees.

High pressure builds inland on Tuesday and Wednesday. Accompanying thermal low pressure over the Willy Valley turns the flow offshore. That gives us east wind. Light easterlies Tuesday morning build to 15-20 midday between Rooster Rock and Home Valley. The wind fades back to 5-10 in the afternoon. Wednesday starts with E 20-25 from Rooster Rock to Home Valley with 15-20 near Viento. The wind holds through early afternoon and then drops to E 5-10 after 2pm.

Models agree on 21-24 out of the west on Thursday but disagree on the Friday/Saturday forecast.

BONUS: Jones Monday: 12-15. Tuesday: nope. Wednesday: 10-13. Sauvie’s Monday: 13-16. Tuesday: 17-21. Wednesday: 5-10. Coast (north/central/south). Monday: 15-20/20-25/30+, W swell 4′ at 10 seconds. Tuesday: 20-25/20-25/30+, NW 4′ @ 9. Wednesday: 15-20/5-10/15-20, NW 4′ @ 9.

Upcoming Events

This year’s the 75th of the Roy Webster Cross Channel Swim, where hundreds of people jump from the Sternwheeler and swim across the Columbia. Sadly, it was too windy to run the swim this morning. It’s year 7 of the Timberline Mountain Music festival, a free Roots music event starting at 12:30 today. Just a reminder that the show’s free, but you’re not allowed to bring picnic lunches and your dog has to stay at home.

The number of events really starts to slow down this time of year, but we do have two this upcoming weekend: the Aluminum Man triathlon is in The Dalles on Saturday morning, and Yoga Samadhi has a free half-day meditation retreat Saturday afternoon.

Have an awesome day today!
