Gorge Wind Forecast

Summer must be here, because most of the upcoming days have west wind of some sort. With all the newest varieties of cross-wind and downwind objects, there will be some very happy and tired wind-Johnnies around here. For Thursday, we’re starting off with light westerlies at 5-10 in most locations. As a weak front pushes marine air into the western half of the state this afternoon, we’ll see the wind pick up to gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Locations east of TD will end up in the 7-10 range. River flow is 321kcfs today and river temp is 52 degrees.

That weak weather system moves through overnight and finishes heading east on Friday morning. That sets up a solid marine push that might bring a few marine clouds into Hood River. If that happens, we’ll find 21-24 from Mosier to Rufus for Dawn Patrol. If the clouds stay a bit farther west, we’ll have 21-24 from Viento to Rowena. We might see a short period of 24-27 from Swell to Mosier mid to late morning followed by 22-25 for the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles with 12-15 east of there.

The current (subject to change) forecast for the weekend is W 5-10 early Saturday and calm wind for most of Saturday. Recovery day? Road ride? Sunday starts off calm. The atmosphere destablizes in the afternoon as the flow turns southerly and a weak weather system approaches. This will bump the wind up to 18-22 or so in most locations, but the possibility of thundershowers is real. The possibility of the wind being extra gusty and unreliable is even more real. Long-range, Monday looks windier.

Random Morning Thoughts

I haven’t gone on a meditation rant in a while, so it’s time for your yearly meditation rant. A bazillion studies seem to show that meditation decreases suffering and increases happiness. In layman’s terms, meditation, especially certain types (lovingkindness, for example), creates conditions under which more positive mind states arise more frequently.

I’ve seen this transformation in myself, and I see it in others. I especially see it in my clients – those who meditate seem to make more progress, have more ability to tolerate distress, are more present, and just seem generally more hopeful about the future.

Research shows that even micro-meditation is helpful. Stopping for a minute or two and watching your breath or bringing to mind a positive emotion (love for someone, happiness for the success of others) will slowly improve your capacity for equanimity and happiness. The great thing about the Gorge is that there is no shortage of meditation groups and meditation friends. You can find them on the Insight Timer app, or you can find them at various events. If you’re interested in learning meditation, I can’t recommend the Headspace app highly enough. It’s worth every penny they charge for a year’s subscription. #endofrant May you be well and happy and at peace. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time at Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely. Forecasting and counseling are both deeply meaningful and nourishing to me.

Road and Mountain Biking

I received a report yesterday that Lewis River is open from the bottom. Not sure about the very top. Knebal and Eightmile and Bottle Prairie are definitely not open per multiple reports, contradicting earlier information. Cows are out on Hospital Hill, so no dogs are allowed. There’s a work party on the 140 on Saturday – meet at 9am at the intersection of Post Canyon Road and Riorden Hill Road. There’s a ride to benefit the National Psoriasis Foundation on Sunday at 10am at Kickstand Coffee. The ride is free (by donation?), and there will be donuts awaiting participants at Rowena Crest.

Upcoming Events

Today’s free events start with meditation at 6:15 at Trinity Natural Medicine and yoga at 8am at Flow. There’s Tai Chi at the Hood River Adult Center at 2:30 for $5, and Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association has a cleanup at the west end of the Hook from 3 to 5. There’s yoga at 6 at Samadhi in White Salmon, Zumba at 6:30 at Mid-Valley Elementary, and Tai Chi at Our Savior Church in Bingen at 6:30.

Tomorrow’s the Kickstand Coffee and Donut Run at 7am, and it’s First Friday in Hood River. On Saturday, there’s a work party on the flat section of the 140 trail in Post Canyon. The Dog River Super D is Sunday. There’s a fundraiser bike ride for the National Psoriasis Foundation on Sunday at Kickstand Coffee. As always, there are free art classes for kids on Sunday from 1 to 3 at Columbia Center for the Arts.
