Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Tuesday morning, and Mt. Hood is starting off partly cloudy with snow flurries. This weather will continue for much of the day, with decreasing snow into the afternoon and warming temps. Rain moves in tonight. The snow level today will be 2500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ tonight. We’ll see .1-.2” water value (WV) between this morning and 5pm, for 1-2” of snow. We’ll see 1/3-1/2” rain tonight. Wind today will be W 20 for much of the day, WSW 25 in the afternoon, and WSW 40 after midnight.

Wednesday looks rainy for much of the day with a switch to snow in the evening. Models are disagreeing a bit about when the snow level will drop, so the rain v. snow amounts are going to be a bit of a guess. The snow level is forecast to be 8000′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 2500′ after midnight. We’ll see 3/4-1” rain during the day. That’s followed by .6” WV of mixed precipitation in the evening and overnight. Let’s call it 2-3” of new snow by Thursday morning. Wind on Wednesday will be WSW 40 for much of the day, W 35 in the afternoon and evening, and W 25 late evening into Thursday morning.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Thursday looks partly cloudy with flurries in the morning and sunny in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 2500′ for much of the day, rising to 4000′ after midnight. We’ll see .2” WV during the day, for a couple inches of new snow before the sky clears. Wind on Thursday will be W 25 for much of the day, NW 25 in the evening, and N 20 overnight.

Friday currently looks sunny. The free air freezing level will be 4000′ early and 6000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be N 20 early and NW 10 in the afternoon. Saturday currently looks cloudy with a slight chance of sprinkles. Sunday also looks cloudy with a slight chance of afternoon sprinkles.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re starting off Tuesday with the following facts: 420kcfs, 44 degree water, and W .06 (pdx-dls) and W .04 (dls-psc). By mid-afternoon, we’ll have west wind at 7-10 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 13-16 east of The Dalles. Wednesday starts of light, variable and rainy. In the afternoon, the wind will pick up to W 7-11 from Stevenson to Doug’s with 20-23 east of The Dalles.

Thursday looks like an interesting day. A weather system moves across the Cascades and is followed by strong high pressure building offshore. Models currently suggest we’ll start out with Dawn Patrol at 15-18+ from Stevenson to Hood River with 20-23 from Mosier to Biggs. The will will pick up early in the afternoon, giving us 26-30 from Rowena to Biggs, possibly out to Arlington, but possibly not. It’s hard to say if the clouds will burn back enough to power up the Hatchery, but I’d guess we’ll just see gusty 22-25 there. Friday currently looks like 21-24 from Hood River to Rufus. Remember that river flow is 420kcfs right now, which is an awful lot for the Maryhill stretch of the river.

Random Morning Thoughts

You’re going to think this is a little silly, but I’m not feeling motivated to reflect on anything this morning. The problem is that I have a sink full of dishes and a huge pile of laundry on my bed. This wouldn’t be a problem except for the fact that I have a friend making the 200 mile drive from Portland to go for a hike with me today.

Keeping my mind focused on reflecting is difficult with those dishes and clothes in the back of my mind.

We do this a lot, right? Things that are bothering us interfere with our ability to accomplish other tasks. While there are times when we can’t resolve what’s on our mind, there are other times we can take the (often scary) step of moving towards a resolution, thus freeing up our mental bandwidth for more important tasks.

I mean, really… is ruminating on something for days, weeks, or longer really less painful than making an attempt to resolve a situation? Probably not. So, take some tiny step towards getting that mind-occupying thing resolved (fold just part of that huge pile of laundry, for example), and before you know it, your mind will be on to better thoughts. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you’d like to go mountain biking, you can head to Syncline with half of Portland and three quarters of the Gorge. There were a gazillion hikers out there yesterday and one crazy Ann riding up Hidden. =) Sandy Ridge is also open. We have a report that the Gorge 400 is open – I will go jogging and check it out for you on Wednesday. Do not ride Post, because you will damage it. In other news, Dry Creek, Osborn, and Carroll are all in amazing shape for dirt roads, and I highly recommend you do some road biking soon.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s free yoga at Flow at 4:30 and at HAVEN (Strong Women Yoga) in The Dalles at 5. There’s pickup touch rugby at 5 at the Hood River Marina Park. There’s $12 Prime Rib at Cebu tonight from 5pm to 9pm. At 6:30 this evening, there’s meditation at Yoga Samadhi led the monks from Pacific Hermitage. This remains, and most likely always will, my favorite activity of the week.

Have an awesome day today!
