Tuesday. Do you know where your smallest gear is hiding?

2014-11-09_16-07-34 M=C
The wind is already beating the models this morning, and that’s a good thing for all of you who have a chance to get on the water today. The early gradients were .06 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc). With not much happening in the upper atmosphere today, we’ll see a decent day of wind. That said, the marine clouds were past Hood River this morning, meaning that the steadiest wind will likely shift a bit further east today. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect 17-20 from Swell to Mosier right off the bat, picking up to 20-23 mid-morning from Viento to Mosier and picking up to 22-25 this afternoon from Viento to Doug’s. We’ll see 10-13 all day east of The Dalles, unless Maryhill decides to pick up to 17-20, which is a maybe today. Stevenson is a big maybe today, and depends on whether the clouds break up or not.

Wednesday sees a deeper layer of marine clouds, which makes the western edge of the wind field a bit tricky to predict. That said, it’s a nearly ideal setup, with high pressure off the coast and nothing much happening as far as fronts/waves/tornados/etc. East of the marine clouds, likely starting at Bingen on Wednesday, we’ll have Dawn Patrol at 23-26. The wind will quickly pick up to 25-29 from the edge of the clouds to Doug’s. It won’t be long before we see 30+ from Mosier to Threemile. Now, as you may have guessed, Swell is a big maybe on Wednesday. I’m hoping for a big YES, because it means I get to sail before therapy and school (thank you to my therapist for shifting me to 3pm tomorrow), but we’re going to have to wait until tomorrow and see.

We’ll have the same issue with the marine clouds on Thursday, with even more depth to the clouds. The day starts off with Dawn Patrol at 25-29 from Mosier to Rufus and quickly picks up to 30++. Two pluses for Thursday because the models show even more wind than Wednesday. That said, we do have a new upper level low dropping into the picture from Alaska on Thursday afternoon or evening, and that system’s approach could affect wind quality as the day goes on. So, get out early, rather than late. Bring your helmet, smallest gear, and PFD, just in case.

There’s quite a bit of disagreement in the models over the Friday-Sunday period. As of right now, it’s looking like 22-25 or more each day, but long-range forecasting is incredibly unreliable, so I’d recommend not planning your long drive quite yet.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I started writing something this morning and realized that I’m just too groggy to say something coherent, so I erased it and am going to get on with my day. There are times that we need to do that, ya know. Just accept that we’re not in our best space, and go easy on ourselves. We Americans are very driven, and many of us experience guilt and shame when we stop pushing ourselves to the max. It is okay to give in to the desire to chill out sometimes. Don’t let the guilt get ya. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s mostly clear out there this morning, and will get more clearerier (new word, you like?) as the day goes on. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 60’s to low 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. .001% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks more marine-cloudy, but still just partly cloudy or clear. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Nuking wind. .1% chance of rainbows. Thursday looks just like Wednesday, but a few degrees cooler in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’ve received confirmation from multiple people over the last few days that Lewis River is open with one tree down. Knebal Springs is also open. I still have no word on Surveyor’s or 8 Mile. There are trees down on the Superconnector, and Dog River, apparently, is not destroyed from the Super D. Heck, I haven’t even been mountain biking for four days, so I’m not sure about Post! Sheesh! As for road biking, your best bet is this morning, and it’s already breezy out there, so get it before it gets breezier.

Upcoming Events

Today’s free events include yoga at Flow in Hood River at 4:30, Pickleball at May Street Elementary at 5:15, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Marina at 5:30, Meditation at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30.

This weekend’s a busy one with the holiday. Skibowl is hosting mountain bike races all weekend, and the Adventure Park is free to active duty military all weekend. There’s a catfish derby in The Dalles, the Color Dash Run in North Bonneville Saturday, the Lewis and Clark 24 hour bike race in Hockinson on Saturday and the Sisters Stampede mountain bike race on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
