Thursday. Wind for the weekend. Come play!

DSC_2698-3
It’s yet another light wind start out there, great for fishermen (22799 Chinook and 1800 Steelhead over Bonneville yesterday), rowing people, crazy Tri Club swimmers, light wind SUPers, road bikers, and people who like to experience the woods in silence. Gradients are starting the day at .03 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). We’ll see the wind slowly build today, to 10-13 midday from Stevenson to Mosier and 16-19 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Rufus. We may see 21-24 at the Rowena stretch, but it doesn’t seem all that likely today. Continued after the chart.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Tomorrow starts off with very light wind, perhaps even glassy conditions. It’ll still be pretty light around noon, 10-13 or less, but by the middle of the afternoon, we’ll see 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Swell will likely see just a brief period of these stronger winds, but brief is better than nothing at all.

Expect strong wind on Saturday. Models show 24-28 right off the bat, but given the temp prediction of 45 for the morning, I think 24-28 is optimistic. That said, you can expect the wind to build to 26-30 by late morning from Swell to Doug’s, and then out to Rufus. An offshore weather system may impact the wind quality in the afternoon, so getting it early would be best. There’s some disagreement in the models for Sunday; it appears we’ll see at least 15-18, but that’s a long ways out.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: light/light/25-30. NW swell 9′ at 11 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/10-15/15-20, NW 4 @ 8. Saturday: light/light/25-30. NW 4 @ 8.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast: Jones today, 10-13. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Saturday, 16-19. Sauvie’s today, light. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 7-10. Sauvie’s Saturday, 5-8.

Random Morning Thoughts

A friend of mine loaned me a great book recently. It’s a poetic reflection on the dark, including the concept of segmented sleep.

As the author, Clark Strand, points out, the invention of electric light has turned us from creatures of the dark into creatures of eternal light. Artificial light has changed our sleep cycle, possibly altered our brain states, and has left us with very little down time.

I would like to add that continuous light keeps our brains on high alert: we are constantly processing incoming images, colors and movements around us. All this information from without keeps us from seeing the information from within. We watch the outside world, consciously and unconsciously, and we forget about our inner experiences. Perpetual light keeps our inner world in the dark.

My cat woke me up around 1am today, and feeling rather chipper, I got up and went for a walk in my neighborhood. It was too bright: streetlights, porch lights, televisions… We are fighting the dark in many ways. Wanting to experience the dark, I went home and sat in my dark living room. I waited. Without the constant influx of information, my mind calmed. Clarity arose about a troubling inner experience. I cried. I smiled. I wrote a poem. And then I went back to sleep.

I agree with Strand: the dark is important. The dark allows us to shine the light of understanding on ourselves. Try it sometime: sit in the dark and watch what happens within you. You might be surprised at the light that shines forth from your soul. Have an awesome day… and night.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I thought it would be a lot cloudier out there this morning, but Mother Nature thinks otherwise. It’s mostly clear. Expect a few more clouds and a slight chance of showers later in the day. Until then: temps in the low 50’s early and upper 60’s this afternoon . Light wind early, moderate late, 2% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow looks partly cloudy with showers as an upper low sits over the PNW. Temps will be in the mid 40’s (brrrr!) early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate late, 23% chance of rainbows.

Saturday looks partly cloudy to mostly clear with temps in the mid 40’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m not sure how things shook out in Post yesterday, but I’m almost certain it was a full-on tack alert, at least for a while. It wouldn’t hurt you to check it out today before the dirt dries back out. The word on 44 is that those trails are still dry. No word on Lewis River and Falls Creek, but the radar showed more rain there than here, so it’s worth checking.

In road bike news, this morning and tomorrow morning look great: cool temps, light wind, and clean air. Yummy. Let’s ride bikes!

Upcoming Events

There are just a couple of events today: There’s the race-pace Post n’ Pint at Dirty Fingers at 5:30. Do that two hour ride, and the shop will give you a pint of beer. There’s a free yoga class tonight at Yoga Samadhi at 6:30. Tomorrow morning at 7am is the Kickstand Coffee Run – 4 miles gets you a free coffee and donut.

There are more donuts and coffee at the running club trail run Saturday morning at 8 in Post Canyon. They’ll also be free demos of the super-padded Hoka One shoes at that event.

Saturday is the Fallen Garden Party at Pacific Hermitage: meal offering, aka potluck, at 11 (be there at 10:30), garden party at 1pm, tea with monks and other cool people at 3pm. Saturday evening is the customer appreciation party at Windance. On Sunday, it’s the Dirty Sellwood ride and the last swap meet of the season, happening at Luhr Jensen.

Have an awesome day today!
