Thursday. The holiday weekend is almost here…

2015-04-05_10-09-59 M=C-Edit
I got home from school late last night, and that means the forecast is late this morning. What can I say? This woman needs her sleep! Anyway, as I was writing this forecast around 8:45am, it was already windy on the river with gradients of .09 (pdx-dls) and .10 (dls-psc) and .22 (N-S). River temps is 58 degrees, and flow at The Dalles this morning was 233kcfs. Marine clouds were past Hood River this morning, and a weak disturbance in the force is forecast to move through during the day today. Along with all that, there’s a surface high of 1033mb over the Pacific. This, although not a perfect setup, is a pretty good one. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

So, expect 14-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles this morning with 20-23 at Swell and Mosier. Maryhill should hang out in the 22-25 range until noon, with Arlington at 24-28. Models say it’ll get windier this afternoon, and that seems reasonable to me. You can expect 26-30 from Maryhill to Threemile this afternoon, lasting until dark, most likely. It’ll possible we’ll see a period of 30-35 early afternoon at Maryhill and late in the day at Arlington. The Rowena to Avery stretch of river is a big maybe today, depending on the clouds. It’ll probably be 26-30 there too.

Friday sees another weather system move inland. We’ll start the day with 13-16 pretty much everywhere, perhaps with the exception of Stevenson, which will likely start off the day light. In the afternoon, we’ll see gusty 13-16 at Stevenson, gusty 20-23 from Viento to Mosier, and 24-27 from Mosier to Arlington.

Looking at the weekend, the forecast keeps changing. Today’s forecast says W 5-10 on Saturday morning with W 12-15 Saturday afternoon, strongest near Hood River. Sunday looks like it’ll start off light and pick up to 24-28 in the afternoon. Memorial day looks like a light start with 13-16 in the afternoon.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

No, I don’t feel like forecasting snow today.

Random Morning Thoughts

I woke up late and tired this morning – three days of school in a row in Portland plus work can be wicked tough. Anyway, I was staring out the window at my beautiful view feeling a bit blue. I took a moment to turn inwards, and I realized I am actually feeling really good – things are quite lovely in my world, for the most part. I mean really, look what I get to do for one of my jobs – forecast wind and snow for all you lovely people.

Anyway, I was reminded of something: our moods and emotions are complex. We can be having the best day in the world, everything can be going well in our lives, and if we’re tired or sore or sick, those sensations can overwhelm our peace and contentment.

That’s why it’s important to have discernment over our inner worlds. If we let our physical issues overwhelm our emotional state, we’ll find ourselves feeling worse than is warranted by any given situation. You can do this by taking a moment to look inside and ask, “Am I tired? Am I sore?” and then you can look inside and say, “How am I feeling, emotionally speaking?” If you can distinguish between the two, you’ll have a bit more control over your inner world, and that’s always a good thing. The mind, after all, is a difficult beast to control and understand (funny that something so out of control lives in you, isn’t it?).

So, make sure you’re not confusing “tired” with “grumpy”. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

I was able to get into Post for a quick lap yesterday to inspect the dirt. It’s a mix of tacky and fast, dry hardpack with scattered ball bearings. In other words, the riding is great. In road biking news, both Saturday and Sunday look like light wind mornings, so there’s great pavement to be had as well!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include pickleball at 5:15 at May Street Elementary, the race-pace Post n’ Pint bike ride at 5:30 at Dirty Fingers, and Community Yoga at 6pm at Samadhi. At 6:30, there’s Tai Chi at Our Saviour Church in Bingen and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center. Tomorrow morning at 7am, you can head to Kickstand coffee where going for a 4 mile jog will earn you a free cup of coffee and a donut.

Looking at this weekend, North Bonneville has the Color Dash Run on Saturday, there’s a catfish Derby happening in The Dalles, and Windance has a kiter-only swap meet at 5pm on Saturday. After the swap, head over to 2nd Wind for the Spring Kickoff Kite Party from 8pm to 10pm. Skibowl is free all weekend long for active duty military and half-off for military family members.

Have an awesome day today!
