Sunday. Ready for a wicked windy week? I thought you might be!

DSC_2358
In a delightful turn of events yesterday, the westerlies picked up just enough in the afternoon (13-16 rather than the predicted 5-10) to get a bunch of folks out on the water. Lovely. We like it when that happens. It’s not looking like we’ll be blessed with more of that magic today, but hey, you never know, right? Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Sunday, that’s today in case you’ve forgotten, started of with a piddly little east gradient of .01. If the models are correct today, that won’t change much – all we’ll see for wind is easterlies up to 5mph this afternoon. River temp is 64 degrees, flow at The Dalles is 165kcfs, and 2909 Chinook make it past Bonneville yesterday.

Everything changes starting on Monday, setting us up for a very windy week in the Gorge. This is happening because I have class in Portland four days a week right now and also because I have multiple research papers to complete in the next three weeks. That, of course, will not stop me from windsurfing when I can. Take that, PSU! Anyway, you were wondering about the forecast for Monday… Expect a light easterly start on Monday. As a weak disturbance moves through, we’ll see 15-18 in the afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles, picking up to 22-25 after 5pm.

The heat low moves to the desert on Tuesday and combines with a big marine push in Portland for Dawn Patrol on the river. Expect 24-28 right off the bat from Viento to Mosier, with 26-30 likely for the rest of the day. Go ahead and repeat this scenario, or something similar to it, all the way through Friday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m starting a women’s circle with several acquaintances, and for me, this is a scary thing. We’ll skip the details and go with the fact that it raises some discomfort for me. One of the things we humans do is confuse discomfort with danger, and that causes us to restrict our choices and constrict our worlds.

It’s important to learn to distinguish discomfort from true fear. Moving through discomfort leads to growth. Moving through fear can get us hurt. How do we tell the difference? That, my friends, is a darn good question, and it’s something you’ll need to explore on your own. But here are a couple thoughts:

Fear, generally, is linked to sympathetic nervous system activation – wide eyes, increased heartrate and breathing, increased muscle tension, sweating, perhaps an urge to visually scan your immediate area or perhaps an urge to not move at all. Discomfort can include those things, but at a lesser volume.

To distinguish the two, you’re going to have to ask yourself questions. You’ll have to use discernment. Is there real danger present from things you can’t control (unreasonable people, wild animals, sneaker waves), or is there just an unfamiliar challenge (intimacy with safe people, small children, strong wind)? If it’s the former, protect yourself. If it’s the latter, consider giving yourself a nudge forward. Lean into the discomfort. By leaning in, you learn that new situations are within your capacity – you make your world bigger, brighter, and more interesting. And more awesome, of course. Have an awesome day!

One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a darn fine sunny day out there, and shall remain that way all day. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the mid 80’s this afternoon. No wind, no rainbows. Monday starts sunny and ends with high clouds, and perhaps a few big thunderclouds over the Cascades. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind early, moderate wind late. No rainbows. Tuesday looks sunny with temps near 60 in the morning and in the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Strong westerlies. No rainbows. Repeat Tuesday through Friday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Still no word on Gunsight and Boulder Lakes, but people keep asking. That means that one of you needs to get out there and find out if they are rideable. In other trail news, everything else is open, with the exception of Whoopdee, which is closed due to timber harvest operations. In road biking news, today looks fantastic, with light wind and sunshine. You’ll want to get your road biking in either today or tomorrow morning, because strong westerlies the rest of this week will have you suffering in the road saddle.

Upcoming Events

Beach Bash continues today at the Hood River Event Site. Windance is doing a kite demo again on the Hood River Sandbar today. Other events today include by-donation yoga at 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles and 6pm at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s pickleball at May Street Elementary at 1pm, pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm, and pickup Ultimate Frisbee at Westside Elementary at 5pm.

Looking at next weekend, Friday night is ladies sailing night in Cascade Locks, Northwave has an Open House and BBQ on Saturday, Pacific Hermitage has a garden party on Saturday, and Windance has a multi-sport swap meet on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!
