Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and it’s a chilly one here in Hood River. It’s only 36 degrees! Down in the western Gorge, it’s a windy morning, with 30-35 near Rooster Rock and 20-25 near Stevenson. The wind will hold through 1pm or so, and then it will slowly fade. By 2pm or so, the easterlies will be down in the 10-15 range at both Rooster and Stevenson. River temp is 58 degrees.

The thermal trough driving the easterlies shifts into the desert on Sunday night, setting up a light and variable wind morning on Monday. The wind will stay light through noon or so, at which point it will start to pick up out of the west. After 2pm, there will be just enough for your foil board or slalom gear: 10-13 out of the west.

A weather system approaches early on Tuesday morning, setting up a day of gusty westerlies. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Rowena, will start with 15-18. The eastern Gorge will have 5-10 in the morning. Around midday or early afternoon, this weather system will approach from the north (weird path, that!), giving the entire Gorge up-and-down west wind at 12-15.

Wednesday currently looks like a light westerly day. Models are disagreeing over the exact behavior of the wind and weather for the rest of the week. The general picture is that we are in the potential path of an atmospheric river after Wednesday. We’ll have some potential for far-eastern Gorge west wind. That said, it’s likely we’ll end up with rain everywhere in the Gorge, limiting the wind quality and strength.

Random Morning Thoughts

Regret is an interesting emotion. Things we regret: stuff we did, things we didn’t do, things that happened to us, things that didn’t happen to us. This last category, “things that didn’t happen to us” is the one I find most interesting.

We rail against the unfairness of not having what we want, whether it’s a beautiful childhood that didn’t happen, a relationship that failed, lack of health… We question “why” things are this way. While it can be important to create an understanding, it’s also important to understand that we are, fundamentally, grieving the lost of something that wasn’t or isn’t.

Accepting that we may never have that thing that’s missing allows us to start processing the underlying grief. Acceptance allows us to drop the “why??” and the frustration and anger and move through the core sense of loss, unfairness, and helplessness that may underlie our unfulfilled desire.

Moving into grief can feel scary. It can feel like it will never end. But long-term, it’s easier than struggling with things we cannot control or change. Now, get out there and enjoy this beautiful day. Winter is coming, and you might as well make the most of this beautiful day! No regrets. Have an awesome day!

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Just a reminder that many of the trails above 8-Track in Post Canyon are closed. There will be heavy equipment in the closed areas over the next few weeks, so please stay out. In addition, it’s been snowing and sticking above 3500′ or so. Trails south of the 44 Road are likely to be snowy, as well as St. Helens, Huffman, and anything else up high. Whoopdee, Hospital Hill and Syncline are PERFECT right now.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out. Today is the last day of Harvest Fest, where you can pick up huge Hanner apples to delight your Portland friends. There are three free yoga classes today: 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon, 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and a restorative yoga class at 6pm at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s pickup touch rugby for kids and adults at 11am at the Hood River Marina.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. I do this we are getting close!

Have an awesome day today!
