Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Sunday morning as I write this, and it’s sunny on Mt. Hood. Clouds will move in before sunset, and rain will start up around 6pm or so. The rain will then continue for several days at varying intensities. Not what you wanted to hear, I know. For Sunday, the free air freezing level will be around 5000′ in the morning, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ after midnight (that’ll actually be the snow level at that point, because it’ll be precipitating!). We’ll see rain start up around 6pm, with… wait for it… 2.5” of rain or so overnight. Wind Sunday will be W 25 in the morning, SW 35 in the afternoon, and WSW 45-50 after midnight.

Monday looks very wet as warm, moist air combines with strong wind for enhanced orographic rainfall. The snow level will be 9000′ all day and 10,000′ after midnight. Mt. Hood will receive about 3” of rain during the day and 1/2”-1” overnight. Depends on where the storm track goes after sunset. Wind Monday will be WSW 45-50 all day and all night.

Tuesday’s rainfall depends on the exact location of the storm track. Both the GFS and the ECMWF take the bulk of the moisture to the north of the Columbia River. The snow level will be 10,000′ or more all day. Somewhere around 1/2” rain falls during the day and another 1”+ overnight. Wind will be WSW 40+ all day and all night. Wednesday looks a lot like Tuesday: warm, wet and windy. Thursday’s a lot ways out to be forecasting, but the current consensus is more of the warm, wet rain.

Random Morning Thoughts

The Nothing cloud is very low this morning. White Salmon appears to be in the Nothing. It’s very, very dark and gloomy. However, the Nothing is not very thick today, and you can get above it without much effort.

While the “without much effort” part doesn’t always apply, there is often sunshine above the clouds. This, of course, is both reality and a metaphor for our emotional lives. When things get difficult, when we are grieving or sad or depressed, it can be hard to remember that happiness does exist. It can be hard to imagine that we’ll be happy again.

Here’s the thing: while our happiness can be influenced by outside events, our emotions are merely a construction of our mind-body. The potential for brighter moods always exists within us, just as the potential for sunshine exists if you go high enough in elevation.

It can be hard to remember that our emotions are merely a construction of our minds. But they are. We don’t always have the ability to change them, but the potential for something different is present within our neural networks. With the right trigger, we’ll have access to more pleasant feelings. Knowing this, we can feel hope, if nothing else, and that might just be the trigger that gets us out of a dark spot. May your Nothing cloud lift. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

I was at the work party in Post yesterday, and it’s too wet to ride there. If you ride, not only will you slip n’ slide, you’ll do damage to the trails. That would suck, because lots of people did lots of hard work yesterday to make trails better. You would undo their work. Try Syncline or the Deschutes or Klickitat trails instead. One thing to keep in mind, as we enter winter… If you are considering riding Syncline, follow this rule: if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing now, don’t ride. This freeze-thaw cycle makes the dirt very fragile. Not only will you do damage to trails, but you’ll end up with a mud-coated bike. Not worth it! In road biking news, the Petersburg loop should be great today once the clouds burn off.
