Sunday. Get out and play on the river!

DSC_3459
When I woke up this morning, the trees outside my window were still and the river showed no signs of whitecaps. So, I was surprised when I looked at the iWind/iKite and saw a reading of 18mph at the Spring Creek Hatchery and State Park place. Driving that wind early this morning was a surprisingly robust .07 (pdx-dls) gradient. Before I forget, the river flow this morning was 110kcfs at The Dalles, the temp was 71 degrees (although it felt a lot more bathtubby than that yesterday), and 12433 Chinook and 1515 Steelhead made it past Bonneville yesterday. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

The fish counts should continue to be high today, but the wind will stay relatively low. Given the lack of strong offshore high pressure and the continued influence of yesterday’s frontal system, we’ll see enough wind for water time, but not enough for a freakout. Expect 16-19 pretty much all day from Viento to Swell. Stevenson should pick up to the same wind range late in the morning or early in the afternoon. Hood River? Well… given yesterday’s wind performance, let’s go with 10-13 at Hood River. The low res GFS suggests the wind won’t fill in past Hood River today. The high res GFS says it will fill in at Mosier and Rowena late this afternoon. So, for the best results, stay to the west today.

Monday sees high pressure off the California coast and low pressure off Vancouver Island. As a result of this setup, we’ll see 15-18 from Viento to Swell to start the day. By late morning or early afternoon, we should have gusty 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus. Tomorrow will probably be one of those days where the wind at Swell is short-lived, so get on it fast if that’s your plan.

Tuesday starts off with gusty 16-19 east of Hood River with gusty 10-13 in the western Gorge. As a frontal system approaches in the afternoon, the wind east of Hood River, from Mosier to Rufus, will pick up to gusty 24-27. If Stevenson stays out of the clouds (unlikely), it too will see 24-27. This will be another one of those days where the wind at the Hatch is short-lived and unreliable. The long-range forecast contains lots of discrepancies, so we’ll just not talk about it at this point.

Random Morning Thoughts

I have a lot of thoughts going through my head this morning, but none are speaking loudly to me. Also, I’m feeling some anxiety about getting this done, because I want to make it to a 9 o’clock yoga class. So, in the interest of being kind to myself, I’m skipping out on the RMT today. Take that as permission to be kind to yourself today too, and have an awesome day.
