Saturday. What a darn fine day it is!

DSC_3200
When I looked at the models yesterday morning and last night, it looked like we might see 10-13 or so this morning. However, reality is crushing the models this morning, with light and variable wind on the river and just a .03 gradient from Portland to The Dalles. That might be enough to give us 5-10 as the day warms up a bit, but it’s not worth planning your day around, especially with Beach Bash and Windance’s kite demo happening today. Generally speaking, it’s not windy when those events happen. Kiteboarding for Cancer, however, always gets enough wind! Continued after the chart…

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

That said, it’s worth swinging by the Event Site for Beach Bash, because they do have free standup paddle and windsurfing lessons happening today. Also, for $10 (members) or $20 (non-members), you can have unlimited demos of gear. So, go down there, join CGWA, and spend the weekend playing on the river. Windance’s kite demo also includes a beach party and BBQ. They’ll be out on the Hood River Sandbar (it’s still hard for me to remember that we have two sandbars now!) all day long today.

Looking at Sunday, you can expect light and variable wind in the morning with afternoon easterlies of 3-8mph pretty much everywhere through the Gorge. And… that’s enough about Sunday.

Things start to turn around on Monday, with 10-13 in the morning and 21-24 in the afternoon, strongest from Stevenson to Hood River. Tuesday looks even better (if by better you mean stronger, and I do) with 25-29 all day long, strongest at Swell. Tuesday looks like 25-29+, strongest at Swell, and both those days include Dawn Patrol for those of us who have to go to work or school.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m no longer sore from the climbing gym, which has put me in a much better head space this morning. I’m looking out my window, and there’s some pretty awesome stuff out there: Mt. Adams, a huge fir tree, a big dead snag, blue sky, and rainbow sparkles in the grass from our sprinkler system.

Tiny awesome things are all around us in the world, but sometimes we get so distracted by the bigger things that we miss the petite sources of joy and wonder. We wander off into the woods with our expensive bicycles, we trundle down to the water with our expensive SUP gear, and we drive around in our costly cars, all in search of the next fun thing.

All those positive emotions we’re seeking live right inside us. No, really. You can sit right there and conjure up any emotion you like. Give it a try – conjure up awe. See, there. You did it. Now you know that you don’t have to look outside of yourself for what you seek. The entire emotional spectrum is inside you. You can conjure it up on your own, and you can link it to ordinary, everyday things (like a sparkly drop of water in the grass), so you feel more better more of the time.

That’s not to say you can have positivity all the time. That’s preposterous, unless you happen to be enlightened. But you can have a better experience much of the time, just by widening the scope of things that make you happy. Now get out and enjoy this awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast

In a strange twist for late June, there’s a bit of a Nothing cloud above us this morning. Don’t worry – it’s not a return to winter. It’s just, well, just something making Nothing, and it’ll go away soon. However, we will see high clouds in the afternoon from a weak disturbance moving through. Expect temps in the low 50’s early and the upper 70’s to low 80’s this afternoon. Light to zero wind. No rainbows except in the sprinklers. Sunday may start off with a few high clouds, or Sunday may just be sunny. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Monday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the mid 80’s in the afternoon. Moderate wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a jog in Post yesterday rather than a ride, and the dirt was mixed perfect and dry. You could go mountain biking today (there are a lot of open trails) or you could do the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour in Trout Lake. It’s a perfect day for it – perfect temps, perfect weather, and full support on the Gorge’s most perfect ride, now complete with huge sinkhole that keeps cars off the 88 Road!

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include a trail run at 8am in Post Canyon, a skateboarding, BMX and scooter comp at 11 at Thompson Park in The Dalles, Beach Bash all day at Hood River’s Event Site, with free standup paddle and windsurf lessons, and Windance’s kite demo, party and BBQ on the Hood River Sandbar all day. Today is also the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour, easily the best supported bike ride in the Gorge. Speaking of guided bike rides, tonight is the World Naked Bike Ride in Portland. Ten thousand naked people riding through the streets. Good thing it’s legal to be naked in Portland!

Beach Bash continues tomorrow. There are also a bunch of free yoga classes – 9am at samadhi, 4 at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6 at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s also ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 10, pickleball at May Street Elementary at 1, pickup touch rugby at 3 at the Mosier School and Pickup Ultimate Frisbee at 5 at May Street Elementary.

Have an awesome day today!
