Saturday. Happy Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day!

DSC_1574-Edit-Edit
Whoa. Yesterday was just a little bit windy. I mean, I know I said it would be super windy, but it’s often a surprise when it sticks around all day long. I was pleasantly surprised yesterday by my sailing experience; I was out in Mosier servicing a hot tub, happened to have my gear in the car, and had a lovely fully-powered 3.2 session. There were awesome port ramps, nice clean swell on the far side, and multiple unicorns and rainbows. I hope you found something equally nice. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

Today’s going to be quite a bit different. High pressure will build inland as the day goes on, and that will shut down the cross-Cascade gradient. If the models are correct, we’ll go from .08 (pdx-dls) west gradient this morning to a light east gradient this afternoon. So, if you want to get on the water, do it early. We’ll have 14-17 at Swell and Mosier through mid-morning, and then the wind will fade away to nothing. But hey, it’ll be replaced by sunshine, so it’s all good!

Tomorrow will be windy, but from the opposite direction as yesterday. Expect easterlies at 28-32 tomorrow morning at Rooster with 24-28 at Steven’s Locks. As always, you’ll want to finish up before noon for the strongest, steadiest wind – we’ll be down to 15-18 or less at both locations in the afternoon.

Monday looks like a carbon copy of Sunday, as far as the wind goes. That means that if I get up really early, I can go windsurfing on my way to school again! It’s looking like we’ll be under the influence of offshore low pressure for the rest of the week, leaving us with light west wind or light and variable wind. But that, of course, could change.

Out on the coast, you’ll find this (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/20-25/30+, W swell 8′ @ 10 seconds. Tomorrow: 10-15/20-25/20-25, NW 3′ @ 9. Monday: 10-15/LTV/LTV, W 3 @ 12.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, no. Jones tomorrow, no. Jones the next day, same no wind. Sauvie’s today, 14-17. Sauvie’s tomorrow, no. Sauvie’s Monday, no.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’m thinking this morning about Christopher Mercer and what he did in Roseburg. We hear these stories about mass shootings, and they are often blamed on mental illness. Or poor mental functioning – the talk about Christopher is that he hated himself and his lot in life, that he was isolated and lonely and angry. Think, for a moment, about how much pain you’d have to be in to turn a gun on others…

Do you know why people end up so desperately miserable and lonely? Because we, as a society, strive for individualism. We turn our back on those who are suffering. We expect people to fix their own problems. We blame them for feeling miserable, and when we do offer help, it’s almost always in the form of a pill. We don’t offer people community, and we don’t offer them support, especially not the long-term support and community that can help heal longstanding feelings of loneliness and isolation.

We are social animals. We need community. We need a family of some sort. When people lack a supportive and loving family of origin, we as a society need to step in as a stand-in. When we don’t, we allow people to suffer, and suffering people do awful things. The next time you see someone suffering, do something, even something small. Eye contact. A hug. A batch of cookies. A conversation. Offer to help. Let people know they are not alone.

When we truly understand that we are not individuals, when we truly understand that we are connected and supported, the pain and the suffering and the violence will lessen. My heart goes out to everyone impacted by Christopher’s horrible choice. May all of you find some peace, and may we all reach out to people in pain so this doesn’t happen again.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s partly cloudy this morning as a low pressure system makes its way east and out of the area. As it goes bye-bye, the sky will clear, leaving us with sunshine this afternoon. Temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Decreasing wind. No rainbows. Tomorrow looks sunny with temps in the mid 40’s early and the mid 70’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Monday looks like a carbon copy of Sunday.

Road and Mountain Biking

Nothing new to say about the trails: still dusty and blown out. Please stop locking up your brakes. In road biking news, this afternoon looks pretty stellar – the west wind will die down, leaving us with sunshine and no headwinds.

McCurdy Farms, Hood River

Need pears? Need apples? Need a suggestion for a good bike ride around here? The McCurdy Farms fruit stand halfway up Peggy’s Roost Hill (2080 Tucker Road, just below Portland Drive) has the best prices on the best fruit and the best ride suggestions too. Fruit prices are $.50-$.75/lb for beautiful pears and apples. Cycling advice is free. They have lots of my favorite pears, Comice. Maybe they have your favorites too. Stop by and say hi to Natalie and Craig when you ride by on your Valley Loop bike ride. Come back later for lots of fruit and suggestions on other rides. There’s a work party on the 170 trail this morning – meet at Binn’s Hill Staging area at 9am. Tonight from 4-6, it’s Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day in Cascade Locks at the EasyCLIMB trail.
