Monday. Last hot day of summer?

dsc_0683
If you happen to be near Rooster Rock this morning, you’ll have noticed a hard, stiff, warm east breeze wrapping around ol’ Iwash Rock. That’s driven by a gradient that stood at E .11 at 6am. If you’re headed out to get some, do it fast. Easterlies at 30-35 early will quickly fade to light and variable wind by 1pm or so. If you’re hoping for Stevenson, expect the wind to max out at 20-24 late morning before fading. Glassy conditions persist this afternoon for a couple hours or so. After that, late in the afternoon or perhaps even after sunset, the westerlies return to the Steven’s Locks to Hood River stretch at 12-15. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

A weak weather system moves in late Monday night or early on Tuesday morning. Low clouds fill the Willamette Valley. High pressure sits offshore and low pressure sits in the desert. Everything’s in place for a gusty fall west wind day. Expect Dawn Patrol at 24-27. Models suggest the wind will die off by the afternoon, but let’s ignore them and call for 26-30 through late morning with 20-23 in the afternoon. The strongest wind early will be from Viento to Mosier. Steven’s Locks will join in late in the morning if the clouds burn off.

Wednesday sees high pressure rebuild over the Pacific Northwest. That starts us off chilly, glassy and sunny. The wind will slowly pick up on Wednesday, maxing out at west 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. If the models are correct about Thursday, we’re looking at 24-27 from Hood River to Arlington.

Random Morning Thoughts

Being a human being, sometimes I do dumb stuff. Last week I did some dumb stuff that was similar to some dumb stuff I’ve done before. I was a bit scared about a response from the people it impacted, as they’d reacted with punishment in the past. Instead, I received a warm, loving, supportive and encouraging response. Although the conclusion of the other party was the same both times (“pull it together, T”), my ability to do so is infinitely more likely this time.

When people make mistakes, we can react with punishment, encouragement or a mix of both. I believe that when we punish people, we imply that only perfection is good enough. Humans, you see, are hard-wired to avoid negativity. We respond more strongly to negativity than we do to positivity – as I’ve mentioned before, many studies indicate that people need a ratio of 4:1 positive:negative experiences to perform at their peak.

Each person will interpret feedback in different ways, complicating the picture of what will be perceived as punishment or encouragement. That said, we’re so hard-wired to avoid punishment and pain that we’re going to strive for perfection to avoid it. As we all know (consciously or unconsciously), humans are fallible and make mistakes all the time. We cannot achieve perfection.

When we punish people with a stream of negativity for their failures, we set them up to fail even more. In striving for perfection, we’re doomed to fail, receive more punishment (from our own internal voices if not from external sources), and slowly spiral downward.

I’d like to advocate for explicit recognition of this. Rather than telling people they F’d up, tell them they’ve done something innately human. Encourage their humanity, humilty and their willingness to make mistakes. Encourage them to change, and support them in that change. We’re all human, and we all do dumb stuff. And that’s okay. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking

I received an email yesterday saying that Whoopdee is open and Hospital Hill is closed. That’s fine. I think today is the right day to ride Plains of Abraham, so in a last hurrah of summer fun, that’s what I’m going to do. Today will also be a good day for road biking, especially if you wait a couple of hours for the east wind to die off.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include Metta (lovingkindess) practice with Kozen from the Trout Lake Abbey at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. There’s Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1. At 6, there’s pickup kickball at Daubenspeck Park and by-donation yoga at Samadhi. At 6:30, there’s pickup basketball at the Parkdale Community Center, Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell and the Parkdale Community Center, and at 6:45, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga Hood River. I have nothing special on my calendar for this weekend, but perhaps I’m just not all that in touch right now?

Have an awesome day today!
