Friday-Sunday. Rain-sun-sun.

dsc_3717-edit
It’s Friday, and the wind’s gonna do what it’s gonna do. Some more details about that follow. The 7am gradients sat at a not-so-perky .03 and .04, and wind speeds were mostly in the single digits with a bit more at Swell. You’ll not find much more than this anywhere at any point today, with the possible exception of some low 20’s at Arlington late this afternoon. In other words, expect 7-10 everywhere but Swell all day long. At Swell, you can expect some up-and-down, mixed-with-sprinkles, 12-15. River temp is 66 degrees and flow is 87.2kcfs. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Looking at Saturday, high pressure moves over the region. That starts the western Gorge with west wind at 7-10. As the high pressure settles in, much like my cat settles in to her bear for a nap, the wind will die off, leaving us with a glassy, fishing-friendly Saturday.

Sunday sees high pressure shift to the east, setting up a reverse gradient across the Cascades. Your breakfast session on Sunday consists of east wind at 10-15. By late morning or early afternoon, the easterlies at Steven’s Locks and Rooster Rock will climb to 20-25. Monday currently looks to start with E 20-25 and end with light and variable conditions.

Random Morning Thoughts

Being human is occasionally a painful experience. We’ll be swept along or washed over by a series of events that leave us feeling wobbly, wounded, wanting. Our minds can respond by obsessing and ruminating. Little space remains for the positive thoughts and experiences that can counteract the negativity.

One way to generate a little playfulness in the midst of an agitated mind’s panicked grasping is to try and catch it playing these games. If, for example, you’re obsessively planning an upcoming conversation, you can classify that thinking pattern: “thinking – planning”. Or if waves of anxiety overcome you: “feeling – anxiety”. You can give yourself props and points when you notice these things.

“Good job,” you can say to yourself, adding to the scoreboard. “Thinking, 7, Planning, 3, Anxiety-ing, 9.” You can keep track in another way: “Me, 7, mind 0.” Back to the “good job” piece. That’s important. Giving yourself some positive reinforcement in the midst of a mess can shift your overall mood.

Playing this game does a few things (at least). It creates distance between you and your thoughts, giving them less power. Tracking the scores and naming what’s happening shifts power from the emotional, timeless right brain to the logical left brain. Finding some playfulness and positivity in the midst of whatever’s occupying your thoughts will improve your mood.

Remember, this is a game. Be playful about it, just like you are playful (I hope!) about windsurfing, kiting, skiing, snowboarding, and whatever else you do for fun. Have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s still fire season, and Whoopdee and Hospital are still closed. Dust has returned to Post. The 44 Road had a good soaking, but I’m not sure how it’s looking now. I do know it’s time for you to start thinking about the high-elevation rides, because they’ll be gone when winter arrives. In road biking news, today (Friday) looks sprinkly with light wind. It’s a good day to climb exposed hills, because you’ll be nice and cool. Saturday and Sunday look warmer and sunny.

Upcoming Events

It’s Friday, and every Friday morning there’s a 7am community run. All you have to do is show up at Kickstand Coffee in Hood River and jog 4 miles. When you finish, you’ll receive a free donut and cup of coffee. That’s better than a finisher’s ribbon, right? If you get up early Saturday, you can join the 8am trail run in Post Canyon. No coffee. No donut. Total ripoff compared to the Friday run! The movie Wall-E plays tonight in Daubenspeck Park in Bingen.

There’s a trail work party at Binn’s Hill Staging Area tomorrow at 9am. Mt. View Cycles has a women’s bike ride (road, I think) at 9am. At 10am at Viento, there’s a celebration for the newest section of the Historic Highway State Trail.

On Sunday, there are four free yoga classes: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm christ-Centered YogaFaith at Pure Yoga The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s Pickup Touch Rugby at the Mosier School at 3, and Pickup Ultimate Frisbee at Westside Elementary at 5.

Have an awesome day today!
