Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

Forecasting wind gets tricky when there are a lot of weather dynamics involved. The next few days fall into that category, meaning it’s worth munching up this forecast with a grain of salt. For example: models predicted light and variable wind this morning, but speeds are running in the teens at Swell and Arlington with 6am gradients at .06 (pdx-dls) and .05 (dls-psc). We’ll see 13-16 at Swell through midday, with Mosier and Doug’s likely to join in midday. Arlington, heck, I don’t know. After 2pm, as a weather system draws near, we’ll see the wind pick up to 21-24 from Stevenson to Rufus, with the wind dying from west to east as the weather system moves in.

Tomorrow looks interesting. We’ll see light wind early, and then we’ll see a strong and compact surface low slide eastward across the Oregon/Washington border. As a result of this, we’ll see short-lived periods of very strong (30+) wind move through the Gorge, starting at Stevenson and shifting eastward beach by beach. Peak wind will likely be between 11am and 2pm, meaning you’ll need to drive pre-emptively to catch it, especially if you want to catch it at Arlington.

Random Morning Thoughts

sunset.8.24
Forgiveness has come up a few times in my life recently, and I’m not sure I’m ready to write about it. But here I am saying something anyway. First, our society doesn’t have a clear definition of “forgiveness”. We seem to define it as, “Aw, no worries. No biggie. It’s all good. Let’s be friends.”

That’s fine if someone spills a hot cup of coffee on you. It’s different when they’ve done something devastating that has life-long repercussions. And it’s very different when bad things are done to children, who then have to process events as adults.

There is no “it’s all good” in these situations. People are angry. They feel betrayed. They are bitter. These emotions are valid, and they likely mask something else: grief, sadness and an overwhelming sense of loss.

This means that coming to peace with whatever happened entails looking at that grief head-on and processing it. It’s just like processing any other loss. And when that’s done, what’s left is acceptance. Acceptance, not forgiveness. Not “it’s okay that this happened.” Instead, what results from this process is “It happened, it’s not okay, and I’m at peace with it.”

Forgiveness, in these cases, is about ending the suffering for the now-grown adult. Bad stuff that happened long ago doesn’t happen in an isolated moment of time; the pain ricochets down the years, continuing to injure the victim. Forgiveness is about ending that pain; it’s about setting the victim free, not about absolving feelings of guilt in the perpetrator. The perpetrator has their own process of forgiveness, and that’s not the responsibility of the victim.

That is all. Have an awesome day. May you be free from the repercussions of past events.

Gorge Weather Forecast

As you can see by looking out your window, there’s a big change happening in the weather. Expect a cloudy day today with temps in the low 70’s early and the low 80’s this afternoon with light wind early and moderate late. Rain will start late tonight and continue into tomorrow morning. 5% chance of rainbows.

Tomorrow starts with rain and temps in the upper 50’s and quickly switches to showers with the temps climbing to the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early gives way to short-lived nuking westerlies in the afternoon. 99% chance of rainbows.

Expect a showery start to the day on Sunday with temps in the mid 50’s. The showers will taper off in the afternoon with partly cloudy sky and highs in the low 70’s. Moderate wind, 87% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

From Mr. Mike Schrankel: “The County has chip sealed Lost Lake Road from the city’s chlorine building (west of Dee flat) up to the USFS bounday (just a bit above the Lolo Pass Jct). Good news is that they did not chip seal the section of downhill lane that was recently paved during the city’s water line project. Both of their sweepers are on it today (Thursday), but may not finish by the weekend. They plan to lay down a fog seal after Labor Day (weather permitting), which will help with any remaining loose chips.”

In MTB news, the rain amounts keep dropping, so cross your fingers for a downpour early tomorrow morning.
