Friday. Here’s to small kites and small sails!

DSC_9829-Edit
Much like yesterday, the wind is hiding this morning, despite a 7am gradient of .08 (pdx-dls). Before I forget, the river temp is currently 70 degrees (the fish are scared) and the flow at The Dalles this morning is 143kcfs. As you may have noticed yesterday, the wind did end up beating the model forecasts, and I suspect we’ll see the same today early, although the models are already forecasting a lot of wind late this afternoon. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Expect 11-14 by mid-morning from Stevenson to Hood River. The wind should pick up to 17-20 by early afternoon from Stevenson to Mosier. As a trough of low pressure moves southward from Alaska into BC this afternoon, we’ll see the wind jump to 24-28 from Stevenson to Rufus. This is the sort of situation where the Swell/Hatchery section of the river can be less consistent than other locations on the river. If you’re aiming to get on the water there, be there when it starts, rig fast, and get it while you can. More reliable options today: Stevenson, Mosier, Avery. Remember that the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest starts today in Stevenson with the pro contest, well worth watching if you’re in the area!

Tomorrow (Saturday) won’t be plagued by the need to play location games. We’ll start off with 25-29+ from Viento to Mosier, maybe also near Rowena. Models say we’ll have 30-35 for much of the day from Viento to Arlington. Stevenson is a little trickier, because the wind there tomorrow depends on the depth of the marine layer. I have no doubt there will be enough wind to pull off the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest. It’s just a matter of how much wind. Probably 22-25+ in the afternoon?

Sunday’s marine layer looks even deeper than Saturday’s which will make for a very interesting Blowout (the 17 mile downwinder from Stevenson to Hood River). It’s possible the marine clouds will make it past Hood River on Sunday morning. If that happens, expect 28-32 right off the bat from Mosier to to Rufus. Less marine layer will shift Dawn Patrol back to Hood River. Models are suggesting the wind will back off a bit after Dawn Patrol, so expect 25-29 for most of the day, strongest from Mosier to Rufus. Swell/Hood River are big maybes on Sunday. I suspect they’ll fill in by early afternoon with somewhat gusty 24-28.

Stevenson will probably start off Sunday with 10-13, but should pick up to 20-23 in the afternoon. The fun part about this is the possibility of a 10-13mph Blowout start at Stevenson with 24-28 or more at Swell. That’s how the Blowout should be! Monday looks like 23-26 early with 28-32 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

At school the other day, someone made a comment to me about harnessing or channeling anger. The implication of this comment seemed to be that the energy of anger could be used to create change.

I’m still contemplating this, but my gut sense is that harnessing the energy of anger is a dangerous path. By its nature, anger is an emotion that creates a divide between people. Anger is black and white; it works on the principle of me vs. you, us vs. them, and right vs. wrong. Anger doesn’t allow for gray areas.

I worry that when we harness anger to create change, we deepen divides and encourage blaming and violence. I see this playing out in politics on both the right and the left: Our dialogue has become “millionaires and billionaires vs. the 99%” on the left. On the right, our conversation is “America vs. the world” or “Americans vs. Mexicans, Muslims, etc.”

The nation’s conversation has devolved into blaming, rather than crafting solutions. Granted, I’m not sure you can craft solutions when emotionless, profit-driven, narcissistic corporations have so much voice and power, but there’s still room for understanding between individuals. In anger, however, there’s no room for understanding.

A few social leaders have turned from anger: Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandi, Malala Yousafzai… Our leaders today have not. They have embraced anger. Yes, we have a right to be angry at some of the things that are happening in the USA. But creating more division by harnessing anger has too much potential to create deeper divides and more violence. I don’t know the answers to our massive social problems. I do know that creating connection and understanding and brotherly love and respect (a slow and vulnerable process) will take us further than fury.

May you be well. Have an awesome day.
