Wednesday starts out clear and sunny and a bit on the smoky side. Gradients looks promising: 0.11 from Portland to The Dalles with another 0.02 from The Dalles to Pasco. Morning westerlies will be in the 13-16 range from Viento to Arlington with the usual light west wind to start Stevenson’s day. By midday, we’ll see the wind climb to gusty 25-29 from Stevenson to Doug’s. Get it as soon as you can near Swell and the Hatchery, because this setup usually results in under-performing wind there. Afternoon westerlies will be gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Mosier (Swell: 18-22, most likely) and 25-29 from Lyle to Rufus with 17-20 near Arlington. River flow is 156kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp today: 84.
A major shift in the weather is planned for Thursday. Clouds, rain, and cooler air arrive for the western half of Oregon and Washington. You’ll be driving eastward for the wind, unless you can take advantage of “not much”. The Stevenson to Mosier stretch will be under the clouds all day. Westerlies start at 12-15 in that stretch and drop to 8-11. East of Mosier, morning wind will be 22-25. Afternoon: gusty 27-32 from Lyle (maybe) or The Dalles (more likely) to Threemile. Hood River high temp: 72.
Friday starts with lingering clouds. Sunshine and clear sky returns in the afternoon. No much will be happening on the wind scene. Morning wind will be 7-10 all the way from Stevenson to Arlington. Afternoon westerlies pick up to gusty 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Stronger offshore high pressure returns for the weekend. That sets us up for westerlies in the (tentative forecast) 24-27 range both days.
Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, further restrictions are now in place. Remember: crowds lead to closures. First, kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Third, Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you are likely to be ticketed. Next, parking has been further reduced along the waterfront – various restrictions are in place due to crowding at Frog Beach. The Nichols boat dock remains closed due to crowding.

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Mt. Hood Meadows is now allowing uphill travel within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. 8/4 Road and gravel news: the Fir Mountain Fire has areas north and east of Pine Grove limited to local traffic only. Also stay away from Fir Mountain Road, Old Dalles Road, and Huskey / Elder Roads. Motorized report: as of 8/1, Post Canyon is closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Other Post news: Eldorado is closed about 100 yards before the Mixed Tape intersection due to timber harvesting. HRATS will be putting in a short hike-a-bike to Uptrack to allow for riding up to the top of Bad Motor Scooter. The new Whoopdee trail is being constructed. Local Events
There are sailboat races at the Hood River Marina every Wednesday evening. Dirty Fingers has a group mountain bike ride Thursday nights at 5:30pm. Cheno has an outdoor HIIT workout at Columbia High School in White Salmon at 6pm on Wednesday nights. That’s pretty much it for outdoor sports. There is a BLM rally every Tuesday evening at 5:30 at the Salmon Fountain in Hood River, and there’s a White Coats for BLM rally every Wednesday evening at 6pm at 12th and May.
