Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and temps are still in the low 20’s on Mt. Hood. This is surprising, because there is warm air headed this way for the upper elevations. Anyway, the snow level Wednesday will rise to 6000′ in the afternoon and fall back to 5000′ after midnight. Precip type is a tough call with this system – temps will be borderline at 5000′. I think I’ll go with wet, dense snow with a chance of some rain mixed in. We’ll see .4-.7” water value (WV) by 4pm, for 2-5” of dense snow. Another .1” falls overnight, for up to an inch. Wind will be LTV early, turning to SW 25 by this afternoon.

Thursday sees light snowfall during the day and heavier snowfall overnight. The snow level will be at 5000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ overnight. Mt. Hood will see .1-.2” WV during the day, for an inch or two of new snow. Another .5” WV arrives after midnight, for 4-5” of new snow.

Friday looks snowy in the morning and clear in the afternoon and evening. The snow level will be 3500′ while it’s snowing and 5000′ after it stops. We’ll see .5-.7 WV in the morning for 5-7” of snow. Wind on Friday will be W 25 for much of the day, turning to SW 5-10 after midnight. Saturday currently has a forecast of flurries, and Sunday brings more precip. The snow level for Sunday currently looks like 6000′ or so, borderline for snow at the resorts.

Random Morning Thoughts

Generally speaking, people who grow up in middle or upper class USA tend to spend most of their time within one small, self-contained family system. There are, of course, exceptions to this, especially when families are connected to outside systems (churches, PTA, neighborhood groups, etc.)

One of the results of this is that we learn to function in the world based on the rules and roles of the family that raised us. What we learned in our family feels so natural that we are unable to imagine any other way of existing. For example, if we didn’t talk about feelings growing up, we won’t talk about feelings as an adult. Or if we do, our nervous system may respond with fear, shame, or any number of unpleasant emotions, thus keeping us within the bounds of our family rules.

These unpleasant emotions arising in situations where we are physically and emotionally safe can be a sign that we are being constricted by childhood learning. Because we are wired for survival, we tend to turn away from unpleasant emotions. If we can learn to lean into them, we can begin to free ourselves from the ways we were shaped as children. We can become more emotionally intelligent. We can develop a wider repertoire of skills. It ain’t easy, but it can be fun if you approach it with curiosity and playfulness. Watch out for those moments where your emotions control your behavior, and be curious about what’s really going on. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Wednesday morning, and the iWind/iKite is reporting some wickedly strong wind: 47 at Rooster, 29 at Stevenson, and 21 at Viento. We’ll see the wind hold for the morning and back down just a bit this afternoon, with 30-40 at Rooster through sunset. Thursday starts with a pre-dawn 30-40 at Rooster. The wind will quickly back off to E 10-15 by noon near Cascade Locks with light westerlies near Rooster Rock by midday. The wind will be light and variable in the afternoon. Friday starts with E 30-35 near Rooster and 20-25 near Stevenson. The wind backs off to E 10 in the afternoon, possibly turning to very light west wind in the evening.

Gorge Weather Forecast

I’m feeling a little too cozy to go out into the cold this morning, but I presume it’s cloudy. We’ll see rain after noon today, continuing through sunset. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and near 40 in the afternoon. Higher elevations will see snow and then rain, potentially freezing rain for a short period. Strong east wind. 2% chance of rainbows. Tomorrow looks rainy in the western Gorge all day with cloudy sky elsewhere. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s in the afternoon. East wind, 14% chance of rainbows. Friday looks rainy and then partly to mostly cloudy. Temps will be near 40 early and 50 in the afternoon. East wind. 32% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Being winter, it’s rather wet out there to ride. Remember, if you ride muddy trails, you damage them. Then volunteers have to spend time fixing them rather than building new trails. Syncline is your best bet for riding right now. One other thing: all trails and roads in Post Canyon have reopened to public use as of Monday. Be cautious, because there is damage and unstable tread due to logging operations. The next trail work party is November 18th at Family Man.

Upcoming Events

Today is Wednesday. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, Community Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and YogaFaith by donation at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45. The Warren Miller Ski Movie ‘Line of Descent’ plays at Skylight Theatre tonight at 6pm and some other time. There’s a half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi on Saturday from 1-5. If you’re interested in volunteering at the Hood River Warming Shelter (and being warm yourself), there’s a training at Riverside Church from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday. The next trail work party is November 18th in Post Canyon.
