Gorge Wind Forecast

If you’re considering getting in the water right now, remember that there is a lot of debris in the river from last weekend’s heavy rain. There’s less debris than there was, but still a high chance of floating logs and other stuff.

We will see west wind today. It’ll be 10-13 from Stevenson to Mosier around daybreak. As this weather system approaches, the wind will pick up to 22-26 between Stevenson and The Dalles by 11am or so. The system moves in to the Gorge early afternoon, and that will shift the wind eastward. You’ll find 24-27 between Rowena and Arlington by mid-afternoon. At that point, showers will start up in the western Gorge, shutting down the Stevenson and Viento area and likely knocking the wind down between Hood River and Mosier.

High pressure builds inland on Thursday. In response, the east wind will pick up to 30-35 near Rooster Rock and 25-30 near Stevenson with lighter wind to the east. High pressure continues to build on Friday. That combines with a heat low along the coast for east wind at 40mph near Rooster Rock and 30-35 near Home Valley and Stevenson. Areas further east will see east wind at 5-10 on Friday afternoon.

Saturday currently has a forecast of east wind at 30-35 near Rooster Rock. Sunday is looking like west wind at 12-15. The long-range forecast carries a prediction of strong east wind again on Monday and Tuesday.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was at the meditation group in White Salmon last night, and the teacher was talking about … well, he was talking about a lot of profound things … but I was really struck by the idea that we strive and put out effort to control our experience in meditation.

The cushion is not the only place we do this. Duh. Having control is a safety and security issue for us. Unconsciously, we think that if we can control our lives (and the people around us), life will be more predictable. The problem with this is that controlling everything around us is an impossibility. When we try, we become more and more rigid, and we become less happy.

We can only control ourselves.

Here’s the funny thing: because humans exist in systems, changing our own behaviors will change (some of) the behaviors of the people around us and the communities in which we participate. Using that as our motivation to change is problematic for reasons I won’t go into (speculate if you wish!). However, if we can harness that understanding and use it to motivate ourselves to be kinder, more loving, and to set better boundaries, others will do the same.

Huh. That was not where I was expecting this reflection to go, but that’s where we ended up. Change yourself. That will change the systems you are in. You’ll feel safer in the world, and you’ll find yourself striving for control less often. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you have Apple Health or can cash pay and come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Not much to say here. For Wednesday, Mt. Hood will start out warm and clear with 60 degree temps and 20mph NW wind. Light rain picks up around 2pm, continuing until sunset. At that point, the wind will be about 30mph out of the NW. The snow level will be greater than 11,250′. Thursday looks partly cloudy early and sunny in the afternoon with the free air freezing level greater than 11,250′. Temps at 5000′ will be near 40 in the morning with light east wind. In the afternoon, temps will hit 45 degrees with east wind at 20mph. Friday looks clear. 5000′ temps will be near 45 in the morning with SE wind at 10mph. In the afternoon, the temp will rise to 50 degrees with light S wind. Again, the free air freezing level will be above 11,250′.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s clear over Hood River, but there’s Nothing to the east. Probably a good chance of clouds this morning with high clouds and filtered sun this afternoon. Light rain west of Hood River. Temps will be in the Upper 30’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Thursday will probably start with Nothing and turn sunny. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Same exact thing for Friday.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

I haven’t been in Post since it was pouring rain, but I’d bet it’s still pretty wet. Syncline or the 44 Road trails are the place to be right now. Last weekend’s work party on the Pinemont trail system has been rescheduled for this Saturday. That’s the Kitchen Sink trail and surrounding trails. Meet at Pinemont Staging Area at 9am.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out.

Today’s “Happiness” challenge is to smile at someone you don’t know. Other events are ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30, Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell at 6, and YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45. Coming up Sunday, it’s the annual Pumpkin Run in North Bonneville.
