There was a bit of early morning wind on the river today, Wednesday, and Portland was pretty socked in with a sneaky layer of marine clouds. Although there was only a .06 gradient between Portland and The Dalles this morning, there was a beastly high pressure system at 1038mb (look at me mixing my gradient measurement scales) off the Oregon coast. What does this mean for wind today? Well… Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
The models suggest we’ll see 17-21 from Viento to Mosier this morning, fading away to 10-13 this afternoon. I’m not sure that I’m buying that. Let’s just call it 17-21 all day long today, strongest from Viento to Mosier in the morning and from Stevenson to Hood River in the afternoon. East of Mosier, you can expect 10-13 this morning, fading to 5-10 or less this afternoon, unless the wind beats my prediction for the Corridor, in which case you’ll see 13-16 near Rowena this afternoon. That was a messy forecast, wasn’t it?

Tomorrow looks less windy, as high pressure fills in over the Northwest. That said, there’s a prediction of a 3 degree afternoon temp difference between Portland and Hood River, and that could kick off some light westerlies late in the day. So, let’s go with light and variable wind for the first half of Thursday. Late in the afternoon, we should see 10-13, first at Stevenson, then filling in to Mosier. We may even see more wind than that – I’m already predicting more wind than the models, but reality tends to be much windier than models in these situations. Aw screw it. How about 14-17 late Thursday afternoon from Stevenson to Hood River?
Friday looks easier to predict, as the heat low shifts east and the high temp drops by about 10 degrees. Expect Dawn Patrol at 20-23 from Viento to Mosier. The wind will pick up to 25-29 from Viento to Mosier by 11am, and rise to 28-32 from Stevenson to Rufus (maybe Arlington) by early afternoon.
Looking at the weekend, for you people planning ahead (and of course this forecast might change), you can expect gusty 28-32 all day Saturday. Sunday looks like 10-13 early and 24-27 later.

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.
Random Morning Thoughts
As you might have guessed, things are really busy in my life right now. Ack! As I was writing the forecast this morning, I was also watching the whitecaps on the river and looking at the snow on Mt. Adams. Behind me, I could hear the cat purring as she kneaded my (her?) oversized teddy bear. I felt very peaceful in that moment, and quit typing in order to enjoy a brief respite from “doing”.
We spend so much time moving and doing that our nervous systems become accustomed to this constant motion. This can create a feedback loop, where our new normal is constant action, leaving our nervous systems anxious when the action stops. That anxiety motivates us to keep moving.
I believe, and this is based on nothing other than personal conjecture, that we need to intersperse moments of peace and calm into our busy days in order to break that feedback loop. There are many ways you can do this. You can stop reading, close your eyes, and take a deep breath while only paying attention to that breath. You can sit in your chair and just notice yourself sitting in the chair. Yes, it’s still “doing”, but it’s “doing” simplified down to as little as possible.
And it takes just a few seconds. You can do this more than once in a day. Give it a shot during your busy day today. Carve out ten seconds of peace here and there and see what happens. It ain’t gonna hurt you, and it might just do some good. Have an awesome day!

Gorge Weather Forecast
Wow. Look at all that blue sky. F’ing amazing, isn’t it! You know, people all over the world don’t get to see blue sky due to pollution, so you’d damn well better enjoy it. And eat your broccoli too, okay? Expect sunshine today with temps in the upper 50’s early and low 80’s in the afternoon. Light wind. Thursday looks hot, but you’ll be able to open all your windows early and close them to keep in the cool night air: temps will be in the low 50’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind. Friday looks sunny. Temps will be in the upper 50’s early and the low 80’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. No rainbows for the three day period.
