Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

You know what I said yesterday about wishing I could always be off by half on my snowfall totals? Well, it happened! Meadows received 9” of snow last night rather than the 5” or so I thought they would receive. It appears T-line receive 19-10”, as they are reporting a 9” base this morning compared to Meadows’ -71” base. I guess T-line has more snow? Anyway, hooray for more snow than anticipated! In addition, the expected social media blitz has materialized, with video of the Meadows picnic tables reportedly making it on the news… in FLORIDA. Continued after the chart…

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

So, you’re probably wondering what’ll happen today on the mountain? We’ll see a bit more snowfall all the way through tomorrow morning. Much like yesterday, our snowfall totals will be dependent on the location of the heaviest precipitation cells. Fingers crossed, right? The snow level today will be 3000′ all day long, falling to 1500′ by Thursday morning. We’ll see .1-.3” water value (WV) between 7am and 4pm, for 1-4” of additional snow. (sorry for the wide range – depends on the location of the heavy showers) We’ll see another .1” WV overnight, for another inch or so. So… 2-5” total by Thursday morning. Wind today will be W 20ish all day, fading to 5-10 after midnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished

Thursday will see a few scattered snow flurries during the day. The sky will clear after midnight. The snow level will be 1500′ early. The free air freezing level (clear sky + inversion) will be around 4000′ after midnight. Total snowfall will likely be under 1”. Wind on Thursday will be W 5-10 early, S 5-10 in the afternoon, and SE 20+ after midnight.

Friday looks clear early, partly cloudy (high clouds) during the day, and rainy after 9pm. The free air freezing level will be 4500′ early with a 6500′ snow level when the precip hits. We’ll see .1-.3” WV of rain-not-snow on Friday night into Saturday morning. Wind will be SE 30 for much of the day, turning to the SW at 20 in the afternoon and evening. Saturday currently looks sprinkly with the snow level at 6500′. Meadows is planning some sort of a preview day on Saturday. Stay tuned to their website for details.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We are starting out Wednesday with west wind in the 7-14 range, depending on where you look. We should see W 12-15 from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles today with 20-23 east of Biggs. The strongest wind will be between the hours of 10am and 2pm. Thursday looks light and variable for much of the day. Easterlies pick up after sunset as a low pressure off the coast makes friends with cold high pressure in the desert. By 9pm we should be seeing E 35-40. Friday looks quite cold – mid 30’s to start – with nuking east wind at 40-50+ pretty much all day.

Random Morning Thoughts

People say you can’t teach an old cat new tricks. I’d like to disagree with that. Last night my cat learned a new trick: how to run out the front door into a pouring rainstorm late at night. I too learned a new trick: how to get a terrified cat out from under a parked car during a freezing cold, pouring rainstorm.

There are two points to this. The first, of course, is that we humans are lifelong learners. Although our capacity for learning slows, our neural networks remain flexible and open to learning our entire lives. My second point is that it’s good to contemplate your actions. We, unlike cats, have a prefrontal cortex. The PFC gives us the capacity to imagine future events and examine possible outcomes.

My cat impulsively ran out the door into a downpour. Her little heart was pounding a thousand miles an hour when I picked her up and put her back into the house. You, unlike Strava, have the capacity to avoid putting yourself into terrifying situations. Before you run out the door, so to speak, activate that prefrontal cortex and examine your intended action, thought, or behavior. Perhaps you’ll decide to wait for a sunnier day before you make your escape. Be well. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

The trails are all too muddy right now, so don’t ride them, okay? You’ll damage them. Better if you save your energy for helping out at the Whoopdee trail work party this Saturday. 9am at the Whoopdee.

Upcoming Events

It’s Wednesday morning. There’s community meditation at Flow at 8:15. There’s community yoga at the FISH food bank at 10am. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5pm and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30pm.

Coming up this weekend: a work party at the Whoopdee Trail on Saturday and the HRVHS Gorge Gear Swap. Meadows has a “preview” event on Saturday.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
