Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! The windy fun continues for the next few days. After that, we’re looking at a couple of (probably) no-wind days on Friday and Saturday. After that, it’s anyone’s guess from this far out; there’s a fair bit of uncertainty in the models. It’s that time of year when we start to turn our attention away from the river and toward the bike trails and ski slopes!

But not today. It’s Tuesday, and there should be enough wind out there to get you on the river. The day started calm with completely flat gradients between the metro area and the Gorge. As a weak weather system approaches this afternoon, westerlies kick in. We should see a period of gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier for 1.5-3 hours late morning to early afternoon. The wind then (probably) drops to 13-16 west of Mosier and rises to gusty 20-24 from Mosier to Rufus for a few hours in the afternoon. Models then knock the wind down to 7-10 west of Lyle and 18-21 from Lyle to Rufus. River flow over the last 24 hours was 66-82kcfs, river temp is 64.22F, and high temp forecast is 69F under cloudy sky.

Another weather system swings through on Wednesday morning, and yet another is forecast for Wednesday night. Weak high pressure builds offshore behind the first one, and this gives us a shot at somewhat stronger westerlies. Let’s call it 13-16 form Stevenson to Boardman to start. The wind slowly builds to 26-29 from Avery to Boardman with 11-14 between Stevenson and Doug’s. Rain extends as far east as The Dalles into early afternoon. Keep that in mind when planning. High temp: 59F under clouds in the morning and mostly clear sky in the afternoon.

Writing the complete forecast takes me 1-2 hours a day. If it saves you time, gas money, or helps you plan your life, please consider contributing.

Thursday brings the potential for stronger wind, but it also brings showers and an unstable atmosphere. Decent offshore high pressure sets us up for 21-24 from Stevenson to Doug’s after a light west wind start. High temp: 54F under partly cloudy sky.

Extended: Brief inland ridging on Friday gives us a calm day. Ditto on Saturday. A system drops down from the north on Sunday in the form of a weak Pineapple Express. If it swings through early enough, we could see westerlies in the mid to upper teens. But there’s way too much range in the forecast to make a clear call at this point. Have a great day!
