Tuesday Gorge wind forecast & Gorge weather: cool and breezy with a wind advisory in place. Hot weather coming late this week…

Hi friends! Looks like a decent day on the Nch’i Wana (Columbia) today with several factors supporting moderately strong westerlies. Lesser wind, but probably still enough, is forecast on Wednesday. After a calm start on Thursday, we’ll finish the day with moderate west wind. Models hint at, but do not agree on, stronger wind on…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. SHORT-TERM gorge wind forecast

Hi friends! Looks like a decent day on the Nch’i Wana (Columbia) today with several factors supporting moderately strong westerlies. Lesser wind, but probably still enough, is forecast on Wednesday. After a calm start on Thursday, we’ll finish the day with moderate west wind. Models hint at, but do not agree on, stronger wind on Friday before we plunge into a heat wave that (probably) shuts us down through Tuesday or Wednesday. At the end of this heat wave, look out. There’s a good chance of “The Cooldown You Were Looking For”; the latter half of next week looks promising in the Gorge wind forecast, but that’s a LONG way out to be making predictions.

This morning started with pressures of 29.93/29.82/29.75 (changing rapidly, btw) with offshore pressure of 1024mb. A cold front swings through this morning, high pressure builds offshore, upper-level wind supportsyour plans, and a cross-Cascade temp gradient sets up. We’ll see intermittent showers as far east as The Dalles; head to the desert for best results today. As the front swings through this morning, we’ll have Viento at 30-35mph with the Hatch bouncing around 20mph. Between Mosier and Doug’s, the wind starts in the teens, and areas east of The Dalles kick off at 17-20mph. If you need to make an early move, try for the pre-frontal session at the Hatch. If you can wait…

Afternoon wind drops below 15mph west of Lyle or perhaps west of Avery. Either way, the wind between Lyle and Doug’s is likely to be quite gusty/up-and-down given the likelihood of showers. Between Avery and Boardman, westerlies rise to 28-32mph and hold into late afternoon before dropping to 26-29mph. It’s possible we could see the rain shift as far east as Biggs between 11am and 2pm; keep that in mind for your timing and launch site selection. The far east is likely to be most reliable today! River flow over the last 24 hours was 178-245kcfs (211-243kcfs at Rufus), river temp is 61.5F, and high temp forecast is 62F in Hood River and 73F (with sunshine) in the desert.

LONGER-TERM gorge wind forecast

Moving on to Wednesday, we hang on to some cross-cascade temp gradient, we hang on to some west side clouds, and we add in offshore high pressure. Early wind will be under 10mph west of Avery thanks to showers. Between Avery and Boardman, Wednesday starts with 19-22mph. Afternoon westerlies build to 13-16mph from Viento to Mosier with 21-24mph from Lyle to Boardman. Models suggest areas west of Mosier will drop to 10-13mph late in the day. High temps: 67F in Hood River with 75F in the desert.

Thursday starts dead calm with just a few clouds on the west side. Late in the day, thermals kick in at 13-16mph from Stevenson to the Hatch or Hood River. It’s possible we could see 16-19mph for the Executive Session (after 5pm) from Stevenson to Doug’s, but don’t count on it!

On Friday, we have a shot at stronger wind, but models aren’t 100% certain of this. There are hints of helpful factors: morning marine clouds, strengthening offshore high pressure, and an onshore temp gradient. Strength aside, the focus will be on the Stevenson-Mosier zone. Today’s GFS deterministic predicts 24-27mph at the Hatch on Friday. Fingers crossed, cuz after that heating shuts us down for a few days. As of this morning, it looks like the heat wave will fall apart next Tuesday or Wednesday with a shot at strong westerlies. See you on the Nch’i Wana soon!

HYPERLOCAL WEATHER FORECAST FOR THE COLUMBIA GORGE

THE DALLES, HOOD RIVER, WHITE SALMON, TROUT LAKE, STEVENSON, CASCADE LOCKS, PARKDALE, ODELL, HUSUM, BZ, MILL A, WILLARD, GOLDENDALE, RUFUS, ARLINGTON, boardman

Good morning, neighbors! That was a mean trick Mother Nature played on cherry farmers yesterday – fingers crossed that the Parka and RainGuard and cool temps and clouds protect the crop from splitting. If you were curious about rain totals, here’s the list: 0.10” in Rufus; 0.25” for The Dalles; 0.25-0.5” for Hood River; 1.0” in Carson. Sprinkles continue on and off west of Biggs today, and a few more sprinkles are forecast on Wednesday. Beyond that: dry weather for the foreseeable future with hot weather, 90+, in the cards starting Saturday and continuing through next Tuesday.

Glenwood and our friends around the world this morning

Checking in with Glenwood… it’s 51F there this morning. In Hood River, it’s 59F with a dewpoint of 54F for a humidity reading of 90%. It sure feels like it – the air is heavy with possibility. I briefly thought I was transported to Maui with this mugginess! Now that we’ve checked in with Glenwood, let’s check in with all the folks being threatened by the US: Gaza City: 82F and 59% humidity with sunshine (and yes, it’s a genocide); Tehran, Iran: 88F, sunny, and 19% humidity; Havana, Cuba: 83F, cloudy, 79% humidity; Muscat, Oman is 101F, sunny, with 32% humidity and a forecast low of 91F; Caracas, Venezuela is 75F, partly cloudy, with 66% humidity; and Nuuk, Greenland, is 39F, cloudy, with 83% humidity. Goodness gracious – we’re all in this together, aren’t we?

Today’s Gorge weather forecast

For today in the Gorge, models give us intermittent sprinkles as far east as The Dalles all day with a shot at showers as far east as Rufus between 11am and 2pm. Rain totals will be minimal, unlike yesterday. Clouds burn off this afternoon leaving us partly to mostly cloudy west of Hood River and mostly clear to the east. Areas west of Hood River top out around 60 degrees. The Dalles: 68 degrees. Pasco: 73 degrees. West wind builds to 25-35mph east of Murdoch. Westerlies drop off this afternoon west of Lyle. In between Lyle and Murdoch, the wind will be up and down depending on what the rain is doing.

Wednesday’s Gorge weather forecast

Showers linger into Wednesday morning as far east as The Dalles with clear sky to the east. Near-vertical morning rainbows are likely. If you get out your crampons, you could climb one and glissade down the other side. It’s a thing, you know! Especially during Pride Month! Early temps will be in the mid 40s Wednesday morning except in places with light wind and clear sky. With 850mb temps around +2C, Glenwood and Dufur could see 32-26F if the sky is clear to start the day.

In the afternoon, Hood River reaches the magical SIX-SEVEN degrees. The Dalles makes it to 70, and Pasco rises to 75 degrees. Wind will be under 10mph west of Avery to start the day with 20mph to the east. Afternoon wind rises to 15mph west of The Dalles and 20-25mph east of The Dalles. By afternoon, most of the clouds burn off most of the places, and all the sprinkles and showers quit after 2pm, which should be quitting time for all of us! Yes – let’s go for a work day that pays a full-time wage and only lasts from 9am to 2pm!

Thursday’s Gorge weather forecast

When Thursday arrives, nothing will have changed about our exploitative, vacation-less, work system. But the rain will be done and most of the clouds will be gone. Early temps will be 40-50F. Combine that with calm wind all morning long for a nice outdoor work day. Afternoon temps rise to the upper 70s on the west side and low 80s from The Dalles eastward. Late in the day, we could see west wind at 15-20mph west of The Dalles. To the east: light wind.

Extended Gorge weather forecast

Fuel gets added to the fire starting Friday, when temps max out in the 83-87F range. Saturday: 90-95. Sunday and Monday: even warmer. Somewhere in the Tuesday-Wednesday period, some level of cooling arrives and with it very strong west wind. Beyond Wednesday, there’s major uncertainty in temps. For example, the forecast high on Friday the 19th ranges from 65F to 83F. Similar uncertainty lingers into the end of the two-week period. That’s it for today. Safe travels. -TATAS
