Outfound Series Festival – Hood River

OutFound is a 3-day adventure sports and outdoor innovation festival taking place on June 9-11th on The Event Site. The activities include a speaker series, a startup competition for outdoor driven brands, an expo, hands-on workshops, creatives games and art, outdoor activities and sports on site, networking hours, outdoor films and music performances.

OutFound’s goal is to bring outdoor enthusiasts and innovators together for 3 days of experiential activities. It’s about learning new skills, meeting inspiring leaders and engaging in unforgettable outdoor focused experiences. Outdoor innovation is about out of the box thinking and this mixture of activities encourages that. We believe that getting adventure enthusiasts and leaders together in a creative setting will be a catalyst for exciting new ideas, projects and businesses in the outdoor space.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Note to self: when I say something like I did yesterday, “The expected cooldown is happening earlier than expected,” it’s probably a good idea to adjust the wind forecast from the model predictions. I certainly got caught off guard by the hours-long 28mph at the Hatchery yesterday afternoon! It was rather surprising, especially given the massive thunderstorm that developed just south of Hood River. There were unicorns (huge breaking waves) and rainbows (just look in the spray you’re making) all over the river.

Anyway, Tuesday started off with a deep marine layer and big gradients: .16 (pdx-dls) and .02 (dls-psc). A weak front will enhance the cool air on the westside midday. The dynamic weather would usually be a bad thing, but the atmosphere is quite stable above (not to the east), and so we might just be okay. You can expect westerlies at 24-28 from Viento to Mosier this morning with 13-16 near Rowena. The wind will really ramp up after 1pm or so, going to 30-35+ from (most likely) Swell to Boardman. (continued below the chart)

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued.

One thing to keep in mind is the potential for thunderstorms east of the Cascade Crest. It’s a wild card that could F up the wind out there… River flow is 401kcfs this morning, about the same as yesterday, meaning the swells should be just as massive as yesterday near the Hatchery. Water temp is 57 degrees. Be safe, people – several people got separated from their boards/rigs yesterday, and that’s no joking matter with this much current and cold water.

Looking at Wednesday, we’ll have more clouds in the central Gorge and less wind all around. Expect 20-23 in the morning, most likely from Mosier to Arlington. In the afternoon, a weak weather system will enhance the cross-Cascade flow, giving us gusty 22-25 from Mosier to Arlington. Enjoy it, if you can even move after today. Thursday currently looks light, variable, and possibly even sprinkly in the morning. Thursday afternoon looks like 20-23. Next nuclear-force day in the models is Sunday, but that’s a long ways out. That said, I am clearing my schedule just in case, and you might want to also!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The only snow on Mt. Hood right now is all the snow on the ground.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today’s thought is just a safety reminder given the forecast for strong wind today. Your friends and family love you and would like you to remain alive and well. Several people got separated from their boards or rigs yesterday, and the wind was only averaging 28 at Swell.

Please take precautions today, especially if it gets really windy. Keep an eye on your sailing buddy. Consider wearing a PFD if it gets windy enough that there’s potential for your gear to get away from you. Get off the water when you get tired. Check on others who appear to be in trouble.

If you’re thinking this can’t happen to you, think about this: there weren’t that many people out on the water yesterday, and several of them ended up in sticky situations. That’s a pretty high percentage. Things do go wrong when the wind and waves combine. I mean, really, look what happened to the Edmund Fitzgerald

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s another nice morning to open the windows and let the cool air in, assuming you don’t mind shit blowing all over your house. You might want to bring your garbage cans inside, although I would appreciate knowing if those fancy new HR cans can survive today’s wind. Expect partly cloudy sky today with a slight chance of thunder later. Temps will be near 60 early and 69 in the afternoon. Nuking wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Wednesday looks partly cloudy. Temps will be just over 50 early and in the mid 70’s in the afternoon. Moderate westerlies. No rainbows. Thursday may see some sprinkles under partly cloudy sky. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early. Moderate later. 21% chance of rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

First, the Rowena Curves have reopened. If you are riding out there, please use lights on your bikes because the traffic has been quite hectic. Next, a reminder that many of the 44 Road trails are open: Surveyor’s, Dog, Oak Ridge, Knebal, 8-Mile, Bottle Prairie, Superconnector. If it’s not listed, it’s not open. =) No dogs on Hospital Hill. No riding Innerwoods, Dr. Who, or trails leading to the Bench, as those trails are currently closed due to logging. Post is riding great, especially GP. Lake Branch and Vista Ridge are not open. 44 Road is open. No word on the Mt. Adams rides, but they better open soon because the Mt. Adams Country Bike Tour is happening June 24th.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events start off with a free dance exercise class at the White Salmon Grange at 11. Then this evening, there’s pickup touch rugby at Hood River’s Waterfront Park at 5:45 and meditation at Yoga Samadhi with the monks from Pacific Hermitage at 6:30

There’s a free yoga class at 6:30 tomorrow morning at Flow Yoga, sailboat races out of the Hood River Marina all evening, and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30. It’s $5 to play.

Coming up Saturday, all Oregon State Parks are free. There’s also free fishing at many Oregon State Parks this weekend – you’ll have to check with your favorite to see if they’re participating.

Have an awesome day today!
