Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Wet weather has already reached Mt. Hood this morning (it’s Tuesday), and by wet, I mean rain-not-snow. We’ll see a switch to snow by 7pm with significant accumulation overnight. Wednesday and Thursday look mostly dry. Moderate snowfall returns on Friday with a round of questionable precip scheduled for Sunday.

Details for Tuesday… We’ll see rain during the day and heavy snow with strong wind overnight. The snow level will be around 6000′-6500′ until early evening, at which point it will fall to 5000′ and then crash to around 2000′ on Wednesday morning. Precip will be significant, and will be increased by very strong westerly flow. During the day, we’ll see about 1.8” water value (WV), that falls as mist or mixed snow and rain below 6500′. Another 1.0” WV falls in the transition period between 4pm and 7pm, for up to 3-4” of wet snow. By Wednesday morning, and additional 1.0” WV arrives, for 8-12” of new snow. If orographics work out just right, we could see even more fresh snow! Very strong wind will impact snow quality; sastrugi and windpack are likely, as is very, very deep fresh snow on leeward slopes. Wind will be WSW 40-45 during the day, W 50 late afternoon, and NW 45-50 overnight.

Wednesday starts off with lingering snow flurries, turns partly cloudy during the day, and cloudy in the evening. The snow level will be 2000′ during the day and 5500′ after midnight. About 0.2” WV falls in the morning, for 2-3” of powder. Wind will be NW 45 (slowing lifts) early, W 30 in the afternoon, and WSW 30 after midnight.

Thursday looks high overcast with scattered sunbreaks possible. Free air freezing level: 5500′ rising to 7000′ overnight. No precip. Wind: WSW 30 early, SW 30 in the afternoon, and SW 50+ overnight. Another system swings through on Friday. The current forecast is for 5-7” of new snow with strong SW wind. The weekend currently looks dry Saturday with another system of questionable p-type on Sunday.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Tuesday starts off with light easterlies. After noon, the far western Gorge (Multnomah Falls) sees W 15-20 and areas east of The Dalles see 18-22, increasing overnight. The central Gorge stays calm all day. Wednesday starts off with W 10-13 to The Dalles with 24-28 east of there. The wind fades to 18-22 in the east by mid-morning and goes to 5-10 after 1pm everywhere. Thursday starts with E 10-15 and fades to E 5.

Road and Mountain Biking

It’s just a sloppy mess on the trails this morning with snow over freeze-thaw conditions. Don’t do it, okay? Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. I hear the Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.

Upcoming Events

It’s Tuesday. There’s Zen meditation at Trinity Body Arts at 6am, free yoga at HAVEN in The Dalles at 5:30pm, and meditation with the Pacific Hermitage Monk(s) at 6:30pm at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon.
