Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much is happening on the river this morning, and not a whole lot more will happen for the rest of Tuesday. Want more wind? Wait until Wednesday and Thursday and perhaps also the three days after that.

For Tuesday, a troughy pattern sits over the inland PNW and limits the cross-Cascade pressure gradient. It looks like there may be just enough assist from offshore high pressure and thermal power this afternoon for wind in the teens. For the morning, expect light and variable wind through the Gorge. It may pick up to 6-9 midday from Stevenson to Hood River. On the other hand, it may not. Afternoon wind, despite lackluster predictions from the models, will likely rise to 12-15 from Stevenson to Hood River with 10-13 at Mosier. River flow is 103kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp: 89.

On Wednesday, an offshore cold front moves towards the Northwest. This will low temps, especially on the west side, and provide the impetus for gusty westerlies. Morning wind will be 22-26 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 near Stevenson and 14-17 from Lyle to Arlington. By late morning, we’ll see a short-lived bump to 25-29 near Swell before that fades to 18-22. Other locations hold on to the wind longer – Expect gusty 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus with the strongest wind in the late afternoon near Rowena and Rufus. East of there: 15-18 at Arlington. High temp: 83.

That cold front moves through on Thursday morning. High pressure builds in behind. Clouds fill the western Gorge, probably to Mosier, all day long. Drizzle is likely west of Hood River. Morning wind will be 13-16 in the west and 24-28 east of The Dalles. The wind builds as the day goes on, maxing out in the afternoon and evening hours at 27-32 from Rowena to Threemile. West of Rowena, the wind falls to 10-13 under cloudy sky. High temp: 73.

As of today, the long range forecast calls for teens on Friday and mid twenties on Saturday and Sunday.
