Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

After a wild Wednesday on the mountain, the weather has returned to calm, cool and collected on Thursday. We’ll see snowfall Friday, dry weather Saturday, and light rain Sunday. The previously forecast gnarly Pineapple Express forecast for next week is currently modeled to stay far enough north to spare Mt. Hood from the most intense rain.

It’s a mostly clear start to Thursday on the mountain, and the sun should stay out all day. Free air freezing level (FAF): 6000′ rising to 9000′ overnight ahead of the next system. Wind will be SW 20-25 all day.

Friday starts off clear and quickly turns snowy. Pre-dawn freezing level will be 9000′, but that will fall to 3500′ with the arrival of the precipitation and continue falling to 1500′ after midnight. Snow totals are down from yesterday’s forecast; about 0.2” water value (WV) falls by 4pm, for 2-3” of regular old snow. An additional 0.3” falls overnight as 3-4” of fluffy powder, wind-affected above treeline where the wind will be quite strong. Below treeline: SW 30-35 early, SW 35-40 midday, WSW 35 in the afternoon, and SW 10 after midnight.

Saturday looks partly cloudy to start and cloudy in the afternoon. Rain moves in on the wee hours of Sunday. The FAF Saturday will be 1500′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ after midnight. Wind will be SW 10 early, building to SSW 20 from midday on.

Sunday brings light rain during the day as a system brushes by to the north and west of Mt. Hood. That rain should turn to light snow after midnight. Snow level 6000′ early, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 5000′ after midnight. About 0.2” WV falls as rain during the day, and another 0.1” WV falls as snow overnight, for an inch of new or so. Wind will be SSW or SW 25-30 all day.

Looking long—range, the weather will warm up starting Tuesday. Models have been shifting the bullseye of the Tuesday-Friday Pineapple Express. As of this morning, they are agreeing that the Olympics will take the brunt of the rain. Mt. Hood’s worst day currently looks like Tuesday, when 1.0-1.5” of rain is forecast to fall. Whatever happens, we are expecting warm temps on the mountain next week.

Gorge Wind Forecast

For Thursday, there will be light east wind all day. Friday kicks off with pre-dawn easterlies at 30-35 near Rooster and Stevenson. Those easterlies will disappear by 7am, to be replaced by… west wind at 20-23 from Stevenson to Viento, gusty 10-20 from Hood River to The Dalles and gusty 24-28 out east. That wind will fade to 19-23 by mid-afternoon. Saturday starts with light east flow and builds to 20-25 near Cascade Locks and 35-40 near Rooster Rock.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Road and Mountain Biking

Too wet for mountain biking. Don’t do it, okay? Even if you have a fat bike. You’re damaging delicate trails and undoing the hard work of many, many volunteers. The Power Station has a really wonderful virtual bike setup. I know it’s not the same, but it’s better than damaging the dirt.
