Thursday. It’s Pay it Forward Day. Do something nice for a random stranger.

It’s yet another windy day in the Gorge today, and your forecaster is getting a late start after a late school night. The morning gradients sat at .09 (pdx-dls) and .04 (dls-psc). That was driving morning westerlies in the 17-20 range from Viento to Swell, with 10-13 further east. As a weak weather system moves…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

That was driving morning westerlies in the 17-20 range from Viento to Swell, with 10-13 further east. As a weak weather system moves through this morning, high pressure will build off the coast, and that will be followed by an approaching system this evening. That will cause the wind to pick up to 22-25 this afternoon from Stevenson to Maryhill. Given the setup, I’d expect the wind to be lesser and gustier from Swell to Mosier mid-afternoon, perhaps 18-22. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Friday morning sees a weak weather system move through, setting us up with 15-18 through the entire Gorge, Stevenson to Arlington, right off the bat. As the system goes away and high pressure builds off the coast, the wind will slowly pick up, hitting 24-28 from Stevenson to Maryhill in the afternoon.

Saturday starts with 21-24 from Hood River to The Dalles and back off to 12-15 in the afternoon. Sunday looks like E 10-15.

Friday sees a couple of weak weather systems moving through, but if you jump on the late morning wind, you’ll likely be happiest. As of Wednesday morning, it’s looking like Friday will start off with Dawn Patrol (46 degrees) at 22-25 with a midday session of 27-31 from Viento to Rufus.

Looking at Jones Beach, we’ll have nothing today and 20-23 on Thursday and Friday. Sauvie’s looks like 5-8 on Thursday and 10-13 on Friday. Out on the coast, there’s not much happening today. However, the next four days look good (north/central/south). Thursday: 10-15/15-20/30-35, NW 7′ @ 13 seconds. Friday: 20-25/20-25/30-35, NW 8 @ 13.

Random Morning Thoughts

Today is Pay it Forward Day. It’s a day when we celebrate life by doing small, kind things for the people around us. As a few examples, you could pay the bridge toll for the person behind you. You could buy coffee for the person behind you. You could take something nice to eat to one of the people on the off ramp. You could tip your gas station attendant. Maybe your neighbor needs help with a task? There are any number of little things you can do today to make the world a better place, and by doing so, you’ll make yourself feel good too. Pay it forward, and have an awesome day.
