Gorge Wind Forecast
In a near-miraculous twist, the west wind will continue today despite the blazing hot temperatures! Early morning gradients of .07 and .01 point to another day of corridor whitecaps. River flow is 131kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. We’ll see 7-10 early to Maryhill with 13-16 from Viento to Swell. By mid-morning, we should have 13-16 from Stevenson to Swell with 7-10 east to Maryhill and light wind east of there. Mid-afternoon westerlies pick up to 18-21 between Stevenson and The Dalles, but stay in the 10-13ish range east of there.
Tomorrow starts with 10-13 east of Mosier and 13-16 from Viento to Mosier. Stevenson will likely be in the 8-11 range to start the day. Onshore flow increases in response to a weak marine push associated with a low pressure trough. All that techno-babble gives us late morning wind at 22-25 from Stevenson to Doug’s, with late afternoon wind at 18-22 between Stevenson and Mosier and 22-25 from Lyle to Rufus with 7-10 near Arlington.
Saturday looks like 16-19 pretty much all day from Stevenson to Hood River, maybe Mosier too, with 5-8 east of there and calm wind in the desert. Sunday might be affected by southerly upper level flow, so it’s a bit tricky to predict. For now, let’s call it light westerlies in the morning and light easterlies in the afternoon. Models agree on a pattern change early next week, but not quite how or when. The GFS likes 27-31 Monday and Tuesday. The Euro is less optimistic about wind strength. Let’s wait and see, shall we?
BONUS: Jones Thursday: 23-26. Friday: 21-24. Saturday: 21-24. Sauvie’s Thursday: 10-13. Friday: 10-13. Saturday: 7-11. Coast (north/central/south). Thursday: 5-10/5-10/25-30, NW swell 4′ at 8 seconds. Friday: X/5-10/25-30, NW 4′ @ 8. Saturday: X/X/20-25, W 4′ @ 8.
Random Morning Thoughts
Sometimes we avoid things because we “don’t want to hurt other people.” Each person has different reasons behind this – fearing rejection, loss of a relationship, personal discomfort with pain, assumptions about how others experience pain… Generally speaking, these assumptions are based on past experiences that may or may not play out in the present situation.
In addition, “not wanting to hurt others” actually places the responsibility for difficult conversations on the other person. By avoiding the discomfort of “hurting others”, we put them in an uncomfortable position of knowing something is wrong and being forced to raise the topic. In other words, we use “I don’t want to hurt others” as a way to avoid confronting situations.
Whether you accept this premise or not, I encourage you to watch how it plays out in your life. Next time you avoid something to protect someone else from pain, really analyze who is gaining what in this situation. You might be surprised what you learn. May you be courageous. Have an awesome day.

Road and Mountain Biking
According to the USFS website, Gorge 400 from Wyeth to Herman Creek has reopened. It’s brown and burnt and dusty, not the lovely green trail you remember, but it has reopened to bikes. Plains of Abraham is open. It joins Gunsight to complete our slate of open mountain bike rides. Get out and get some, and take plenty of water because it’s going to be hot. Trails in Hood River County are now closed to motorized use due to fire danger. Bicycles are fine. The Petersburg Loop east of The Dalles is currently closed and under a level 3 evacuation order due to the Substation Fire.
