Gorge Wind Forecast

Thursday morning is starting off with gusty westerlies. Those will continue all day. Friday brings a good chance for you to dust off your windsports gear as a cold front is followed by building high pressure. Saturday brings another round of light wind, and Sunday brings gusty westerlies in the mid-twenties.

For Thursday, the Gorge sees a drying trend as high pressure briefly builds in. This results in gusty 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier (15-20 at Viento) from mid-morning on. Locations east of The Dalles will see gusty 22-27 Thursday afternoon. River flow is 116kcfs and temp is 57 degrees.

Friday sees a strong cold front swing through in the morning followed by building high pressure in the afternoon. Very strong upper flow will accompany this setup; a good overall picture for a big west wind day. Expect a very wet start. You can start driving as soon as the clouds start to break up, but you may not need to. We’ll see gusty 20-23 most locations (except Swell to The Dalles) early. After that system moves through, you’ll find gusty 25-29 from Stevenson to Mosier with gusty 30-35 from Lyle to Arlington. Get on it (maybe drive preemptively), because the wind will start to fade mid-afternoon.

Saturday starts with westerlies at 10-13, and fades to 7-10. Sunday brings another round of heavy morning rain followed by gusty mid-20’s west wind.

JONES, SAUVIE’S, COAST: now on vacation for the fall and winter. Will return in spring.

Random Morning Thoughts

Mt. Hood Mountain Weather Forecast

Timberline received a truly impressive 3.3” of rain on Wednesday, and Meadows received 1.9” of rain. Bye, snow. There’s no snow in the forecast through the middle of next week, but the ECMWF is hinting at significant snowfall towards the end of next week.

So, for Thursday, Mt. Hood will be rainy. Snow level: 10,000′ early, 12,000′ in the afternoon, 10,000′ overnight. Rain totals: .3” during the day and .3” overnight. Given the strong west wind, those totals could double. Wind will be W 25 early, W 40 in the afternoon, and W 50 overnight.

Friday brings heavy rain in the morning followed by orographic rain in the afternoon. Snow level: 10,000′ falling to 9000′ with the passage of the weather system. Rain: 1.6” by 5pm and .2” overnight. Double those numbers wouldn’t be surprising with strong NW wind; W 50mph in the morning, NW 40 in the afternoon, and NW 25 overnight.

Saturday starts of showery and then turns dry. Snow level 9000′ early, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 7000′ overnight. Just a trace of rain will fall. Wind: NW 25 early, WNW 35-40 afternoon and evening. Sunday starts with heavy rain (snow level 7000′). A trace of snow may fall at the end of this downpour as the snow level drops to 4000′. No additional snow is forecast until the end of next week.

Road and Mountain Biking

Now it is too wet to ride most places without sliding and crashing and also, most likely, damaging the trails due to muddy conditions. Syncline is probably OK, but be aware that it is being “loved to death” according to someone’s recent Strava ride. Upcoming Post Canyon trail work parties (all meet at Family Man at 9:30am): November 4, November 17.
