Winter Pledge Drive – Support this forecast!

Thank you for using this forecast. I do it as a gift to the community because I want all of you to have more fun in your lives. We’re all busy people, and having an idea of when the snow, wind or dirt will be good allows us to plan ahead. Although I receive occasional support from advertisers, the bulk of my support comes from the generosity of my readers. If you’ve been using this for years, if it’s helpful, brings more fun into your life, or makes you happier in some way, please donate. $12.34 or more gets the forecast delivered to your inbox for a year (I’ll protect your info). Anything over that makes both of us feel appreciative and appreciated, and also pays my grad school bills. Thanks for using the forecast, and thanks for your support. Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

It is snowing this morning on Mt. Hood, and the snowfall will continue all day today. Over the next couple of days, we’ll see upper flow turn northwesterly, the best direction for orographic snowfall on Mt. Hood. For today, the snow level will be around 1500′ all day long (a little higher than models originally were predicting). We’ll see around .6” water value (WV) between this morning and 4pm, for 6-7” of dry powder. Another .3” WV falls overnight, for another 3-4” of fluffy snow. Wind today will be WSW 30 in the morning, slowly fading to WSW 15 in the afternoon and turning to WNW 20 overnight.

Monday starts off with snow, turns partly sunny or perhaps sunny midday and becomes snowy again overnight as orographic effects increase. The snow level will be around 500′ early, rising to 1500′ in the afternoon and dropping back to 500′ after midnight. We’ll see an inch or so of snow in the morning followed by .3” WV overnight, for 3-4” of new snow in the evening. Wind on Monday will be WNW 20 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and WNW 30 after midnight.

The orographic snowfall increases on Tuesday. The snow level will be around 500′ in the morning, 1500′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ after midnight. We’ll see .4” WV during the day, for 4-5” of powder. We’ll see another .4” overnight, for another 4-5” of powder. Wind on Tuesday will be WNW 30 in the morning, WSW 35 in the evening, and W 50 overnight.

If that W 50mph wind materializes for Wednesday morning, lift operations are likely going to be impacted at all the resorts, so keep an eye on this forecast to see if that wind stays in the models. The snow level Wednesday will be 1000′ early and 2000′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .3” WV of orographic snowfall during the day, for 3” of new, followed by another 3” or so overnight. As I mentioned before, the current wind forecast is for a disruptive W 50 in the morning, dropping to a less disruptive W 35 in the afternoon.

Looking into the long-range forecast, the GFS and Euro are both predicting heavy snowfall toward the end of the week or over the weekend. It’s definitely worth keeping an eye on the forecast for possible big powder days next weekend.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light and variable wind early turns to E 10-15 midday and light westerly after 4pm. Monday starts off with west 10-13 and picks up to W 16-19 from Cascade Locks to The Dalles after 1pm. Tuesday starts with light west wind and picks up to W 13-16 in the afternoon through the entire Gorge.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was having a conversation with some classmates the other day about our our stress coping mechanisms. All three of us have a tendency to take on more when we are stressed – doing things gives us a sense of control when our lives feel out of control. We also distract ourselves by jumping in to new activities.

People’s coping mechanisms vary, but many people use some form of distraction to cope with anxiety. That’s a great short-term strategy, as long as the long-range consequences don’t result in even more stress down the road.

What do you do to cope with stress? Do you work more, drink more, exercise more, cut, try new things, learn something, talk to friends, call the crisis line or warmline (it’s not just for suicidal thoughts, yo!), eat, shop, read…? And what are the longer-term ramifications of your coping skills? If they’re going to give you more stress down the road, consider learning some new skills. You can steal them from friends, from TV, movie, or novel characters, from lists online, or from children. They often have good coping skills: playing, crying, and seeking help from others, for example.

Life can be tricky sometimes. Don’t make it more difficult with your attempts to cope. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

As I’m writing this, the temp in HR is 35 degrees and it’s 32 up in Parkdale. This means we’re unlikely to see sticking snow at river level. Expect a mix of rain and snow this morning with rain during the day and showers mixed with wet snow overnight. Temps will max out in the upper 30’s. Light east wind early, light west wind later. 98% chance of rainbows. Monday starts off with light sprinkles or wet flurries and turns dry by 10am. Light rain returns overnight. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and right near 40 in the afternoon. West wind. 74% chance of rainbows early. Tuesday brings on-and-off sprinkles all day. Temps will be in the low 30’s early and the low 40’s in the afternoon. West wind. 98% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Your trainer bike will be happy to see you today. And so will your XC skis. I tried to go jogging in Post yesterday, but that didn’t work so well – there’s still a foot of snow there. I heard that Syncline is one big waterfall and stream, so please don’t mountain bike there or you’ll really do a lot of trail damage. There should be plenty of good road biking today. Go try that!

Upcoming Events

There’s Yoga at Samadhi at 9am, ping pong at the Armory at 10am, meditation at Flow at 11am, pickup touch rugby at the Hood River Waterfront Park at 3pm, YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 4pm, and restorative yoga at Pure Yoga in Hood River at 6pm.

Have an awesome day today!
