Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and the mountains had about 9” of snow in the last 24 hours. Snow will continue to fall on Sunday, tapering off in the evening with dry weather for the next couple of days. For Sunday, the snow level will be around 2000′ on Mt. Hood in the morning. After the precip ends this evening, the free air freezing level will fall to 500′ or less (in the Gorge, anyway). We’ll see .5-.6” water value (WV) during the day today, for 5-7” of new snow. Another .1-.2” WV falls tonight, for another inch or two. Wind will be W 30 in the morning, slowly decreasing to W 10 after midnight.

Monday will see a few flurreis during the day, especially in the morning, with clear sky in the afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 500′ in the morning and perhaps 2000′ in the afternoon. Wind will be W 10 in the mornign and light and variable in the afternoon, turning to the south after midnight.

Tuesday looks sunny above low clouds. The free air freezing level will be near the surface (sea level) in the morning and around 6000′ int eh afternoon. Widn will be W 15 in the morning, slowly building to SW 25 in the evening.

The forecast for Wednesday currently has warm air coming in over cold air trapped in the valleys. As of right now, it looks like the snow level will be around 6000′-7000′ during the day and 4000′ after midnight, by which time most of the precip will have passed. Somewhere around .7-1” WV will fall, most likely as rain, with strong SW wind.

Random Morning Thoughts

We’ve set our clocks back (in theory, anyway!), which brings us into the season of the dark. Many of us, myself included, are now losing access to the things that bring us the most joy: mountain biking, road biking, windsurfing, kiting, etc. Loving summer activities is like putting all the chanterelles in one bucket.

It’s important to have a second bucket of mushrooms, so to speak. To stay sane and happy during the winter, we need to find other activities that bring us joy. That takes effort – we have to try new things and be open to new experiences, even experiences that are vastly different than those things that bring us happiness in the summer months.

Each of us has to find joy, contentment and peace in our own way. The trick is to not limit what we try based on preconceived notions of what will be fun or not. Even if you’ve tried something before, try it again, just for the heck of it. You never know what’ll happen or who you’ll meet. Have an awesome day!

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but I am seeing clients at this time. In the meantime, I am your weather forecaster. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We have light and variable wind for Sunday morning. The wind will pick up to W 13-16 through the whole Gorge on Sunday afternoon. Monday starts off with very light east wind. The wind will pick up to E 20-25 in the afternoon and E 30-40 after 8pm. Monday brings east wind at 40mph near Rooster Rock and 30-35 near Stevenson with 25-30 near Viento. Repeat that for Tuesday.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s cloudy and showery out there this morning, but thankfully not snowy at river level. Showers will continue today. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and mid 40’s this afternoon. Light westerlies. 99% chance of rainbows. Temps will drop below freezing tonight. Monday starts off sub-freezing and rises to the mid 40’s. We’ll have clouds early and sunshine in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Tuesday looks clear and cold (upper 20’s) to start and sunny with 40 degrees in the afternoon. Strong easterlies. No rainbows. Depending on how much cold air we amass, we could see some snow or freezing rain on Wednesday, but models are definitely no certain on this.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

We’ve had another .25” of rain already today (Sunday), so the trails are too wet to ride, except perhaps Syncline late today. Starting tonight, we’re going to go into a free-thaw cycle. That means the dirt will be very, very sensitive. Please do not ride exposed areas (Syncline, clearcuts) if it was below freezing the night before and is above freezing when you head out. If you do, you will cause major trail damage.

Upcoming Events

Today is Sunday, and you just got an extra hour of sleep. Set your watches ahead, please. There are three free (by-donation) yoga classes today: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. There’s pickup touch rugby at 11am at the Hood River Marina for both kiddos and adults. Looking at next Saturday, there’s a free half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadi from 1pm to 5pm with the monks from Pacific Hermitage.

Have an awesome day today!
