Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! The wind is taking its sweet time getting going this morning despite big surface pressure gradients. But get going it shall! We’ll have a bit day focused east of Mosier. Lesser wind Monday sets up a nice day for those of you who don’t want it nuking. Tuesday might be a rest day. It might not. Either way, westerlies return on Wednesday and almost certainly stick around through next weekend.

Sunday kicks off with clouds as far east as Doug’s Beach, which means the focus will be to the east until those clouds burn away. Actually, the focus will be at Windance, where there’s a swap meet! 6am pressures were 30.07/29.91/29.86 for gradients of 0.16 and 0.05. Despite those big gradients, wind speeds were generally in the teens to start the day. Exception: Viento to Swell at 20mph. If you want big wind, wait until early afternoon. Areas from Avery to Threemile rise to 29-32. Lyle to Doug’s will likely join as well when the clouds burn off. Trickier to forecast today are those areas west of Lyle. This really depends on what the clouds do; models have partly cloudy sky in Hood River until the end of the day. Let’s call it gusty 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier with a period of gusty 23-26 possible late in the day. River flow over the last 24 hours was 136-193kcfs, river temp is 62.42F, and high temp forecast is 72F for Hood River and 77F for Arlington.

A weak system moves towards BC on Monday and falls apart in the afternoon. The hottest weather focuses on The Dalles. This shifts the wind back to the Corridor. Dawn Patrol looks like 20-23 from Stevenson to Hood River with 17-20 at Mosier and 10-13 out east. The wind dips to 12-15 mid-morning. It returns to 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River late afternoon. High temp: 79F with partly cloudy sky to start and clear sky later.

Ridging takes over on Tuesday and equalizes, or nearly equalizes, temps across the Cascades. This sets us up for a lighter day. Models suggest the Gorge will eek out 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River. Looking ahead to Wednesday, we cool off from Tuesday’s heat. Models just love the idea of a big day on the river, say upper 20s to low 30s. Ensembles peg Friday as a lighter day, but they bring stronger wind back next weekend. Have a fabulous day on the water today!
