Mt. Hood Snow Forecast.

Today started off very, very, very windy on Mt. Hood, with the top of Cascade sensor reading 89-129. The wind is forecast to back of quickly, so don’t freak out! Expect a snowy day on Mt. Hood today. The snow level will be 1500′ all day long, dropping to 500-1000′ after midnight. We’ll see .2-.3” water value (WV) by 4pm, for 2-4” of new powder. We’ll see another .4” WV overnight, for 4-5” of additional light and fluffy snow. Wind today will be W 40 early, dropping to WSW 25-30 by sunrise and turning to SW 20 after noon.

Sunday also looks like a powder day on Mt. Hood as additional light and fluffy snow falls on the slopes. The snow level will be less than 1000′ early, 1500′ in the afternoon, and down to 500′ or less after midnight. Approximately .3” WV falls between 4am and 4pm, for 3-4” of powder. Another .4” or so falls overnight, for another 4-5” of powder. Wind on Sunday will be SW 20 early, WSW 35 in the afternoon, and SW 15 after midnight.

Monday looks very snowy. The snow level will be less than 500′ in the morning, 1000′ in the afternoon, and 500′ after midnight. We’ll see 1” WV during the day, for 12-14” of powder. Another .4” falls overnight, for another 4-5” of powder. Wind on Monday will be SW 15 early, rising to W 40 in the afternoon and WSW 30 overnight.

Tuesday looks quite snowy as well, but the snow level will rise during the day. Right now the temps are looking borderline for snow or rain for the midday period, so it’s hard to say exactly what will happen. As of right now, it looks like Tuesday will start with the snow level around 500′. By the afternoon, the snow level will be around 5500. It’ll drop back to 4500′ in the evening. So, expect 1”+ WV between 4am and 4pm, for 8-10” of new snow, possibly followed by some rain (unlikely). Another .8”+ WV falls overnight, for another 6-8” of dense new snow. Wind on Tuesday will be WSW 35 early, rising to WSW 60 in the afternoon and dropping to WSW 40 after midnight. The long-range forecast suggests rain on the mountain Wednesday afternoon in Thursday, so get it now!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light west wind early goes to light and variable midday, E 10-15 for a brief period in the evening, and then light westerly overnight. Sunday looks light and variable for much of the day with W 20-23 after 10pm. Random Morning Thoughts

Folks are getting pretty riled up over politics these days. If you live in the Gorge, you have a couple opportunities today to speak your mind. First, Jeff Merkley has a town hall at Hood River Middle School at 9:30 today. Next, there’s a rally in support of the current administration at Hood River Overlook Park at noon today.

As I think about these rallies, my train of thought has led me to think about why we have government regulations. While the vast majority of us will almost always act in ethical ways and play by the rules, there are also people (and corporations) who will not. It can be hard for us to believe that a small fraction of people always act from a stance of greed, self-service, and lack of empathy for other. These folks do not play by the same rules we do, and that is why we have laws and regulations.

Without government stepping in to ensure a basic standard of morality and ethics, people who do not play by those rules will almost always come out on top of those who do play by the rules. This minority will act without regard for others in order to achieve what they want.

In schools, we call people who do this bullies. In the growup world, we often reward such amoral, unethical, and unempathetic behavior with financial success. This is not to say that success can be achieved ethically. It can. It’s just easier when you ignore the rules. And hence the need for laws and regulations to protect the ethical many from the amoral few. Have care for your fellow humans. Be awesome. Have an awesome day.

White Sprinter Van of the Day

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a ride on lower Syncline yesterday, and it was fabulous. Then it rained, so it’s probably too wet now. I guess that means we’re waiting for a day for the trails to dry again… In other news, you can ride your road bike, but last I heard, you could not ride from Hood River to Mosier due to snow on the Twin Tunnels.

Upcoming Events

There’s a Spanish language yoga class at Flow at 8am, Jeff Merkley has a town hall at the Hood River Middle School at 9:30am, there is a March for Trump rally at Overlook Park at noon, and the Cold Lap cyclocross ride is at Dirty Fingers at 3pm today.

Have an awesome day today!
