Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Judging by the webcams, it’s raining up on the volcano this morning. Light rain will continue through this afternoon, and then we’ll have partly cloudy sky tonight. The snow level today will be 8000′ while the precipitation is around, 6000′ at the tail end of this system, and 5000′ for a brief period tonight. We’ll see .1-2” of rain between this morning and 4pm. There’s a chance of a few wet snowflakes mixed in at the end, but that’s splitting hairs, because there won’t be enough snow to impact anything other than a snocat windshield. Wind today will be SW 30 early, WSW 35 mid-morning, W 40 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight. Continued after the chart…

Tuesday starts off rain, turns clear, and then turns SNOWY after 4pm. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 3500′ overnight. As of this morning, it looks like we’ll see .3” water value (WV) between 4pm Tuesday and 4am Wednesday, giving us 2-3” of snow at 5000′. Wind will be SW 25 in the morning and SW 15-20 in the afternoon. There’s no additional snow in the current forecast for next week.

Winter Companion Rescue Series – Hood River

Winter Companion Rescue Series is targeted to those who travel in avalanche terrain. These sports take us far from help and into terrain that is high reward and high risk. You will learn basic use of your beacon, probe, and shovel. The rescue portion will follow American Avalanche Association guidelines for companion rescue. When an avalanche buries your backcountry partner, acting fast and knowing what to do will save a life. You will be taught American Heart First Aid and CPR/AED skills for remote wilderness settings. November 8 & 9 at 2nd Wind. $94. https://heiko-stopsack-gfb7.squarespace.com/winter-companion-rescue-series

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re starting off Saturday in limbo, with light and variable wind. As a low pressure system moves into northern Washington today, we’ll see a short-lived period of strong west wind. Expect 20-23 from Stevenson to Mosier and 26-30 from Rowena to Threemile for the peak wind period. That should happen between noon and 3pm, so you’ll want to drive preemptively. Sunday starts off with E 20-25 and fades to no-wind-at-all by 2pm. Monday brings calm wind or very light westerlies.

Random Morning Thoughts

When things happen to upset our view of the world, we can feel helpless, disoriented. We can feel stuck, not knowing how to impact our overwhelming sense of powerlessness, depression or anxiety. A simple antidote to this feeling of stuckness is to do something. Not something random, mind you. Something mindful, pointed, and intentional. Think of it as a tiny movement in the direction of “not this”.

Doing something we perceive as impacting a situation starts to restore our sense of power over our own lives. This lightens our mood. In the case of social oppression, for example, I’ve seen people give away 1% of their income, attend peaceful protests, volunteer time, act as an ally to minorities (you can attend a solidarity gathering today at 4:30pm at Riverside Church if you’d like to do the latter), etc.

The impact of doing something is two-fold. First, it moves you out of a stuck place. Second, you experience the rewards of giving. Generosity has been shown to increase happiness. Mindful generosity will increase happiness even more – be intentional about your giving. Notice the impact it’s having on the recipients, and notice the impact it’s having on you, the giver. That will wire the good feelings into your mind-body, lifting you to a higher place. Be generous. Be kind. Be awesome. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

The Nothing is back this morning along with a “moderate” air pollution index. If that’s moderate, I’d hate to be around for something worse. Expect a cloudy morning, showers midday, and partly cloudy sky as soon as the west wind kicks in. Midday? Temps will be near 50 early and near 60 this afternoon. Light wind early, moderate to strong wind midday. 98% chance of rainbows. Sunday looks cloudy and dry during the day with rain after 8pm. Temps will be in the mid 40s’ early and the upper 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Monday looks quite rainy. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the mid 50’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 32% chance of rainbows. Models are still predicting a weak outbreak of arctic air at the end of this coming week. Stay tuned.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went for a New Hot Lap yesterday in Post, and it was just a little wetter than tacky. You know, wet enough that you’ll want to slow down a little unless you have the best tires on the planet. There’s a work party up there today. Meet at Family Man at 9am. There’s a work party at Whoopdee next Saturday.

Upcoming Events

Coming up today, there’s a group trail run at 8am in Post Canyon. That’s followed by a HRATS trail work part from 9am to 1pm at Family Man. There’s a half-day meditation retreat at Yoga Samadhi from 1pm to 5pm today. For those of you with a social justice mindset, there’s a gathering in solidarity and support around people of all colors, genders, etc., at Riverside Church today from 4:30pm to 5:30pm.

Coming up tomorrow: free yoga at 9am at Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6pm at Pure Yoga in Hood River. Coming up next weekend: a work party at the Whoopdee Trail and the HRVHS Gorge Gear Swap.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
