Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Our stretch of west wind continues this Monday morning with solid gradients right off the bat: .12 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc). High pressure is off the coast, nothing much is moving around in the atmosphere, and we’re set up for a solid day of westerlies. Expect 15-18 right off the bat, with a quick build to 22-25 mid-morning and 24-28 this afternoon. The wind this morning will fill the entire Gorge, from Stevenson all the way to Arlington. It’s probably that Arlington will see the wind hold in the teens all day. If you want stronger wind, you’ll want to stick closer to Hood River; we’ll see the strongest wind today from Viento to Doug’s, with the strongest time being from 11am to 3pm. Rufus/Maryhill is a maybe to join in the 24-28 range today… looking at the clouds right now, I’m leaning towards a yes.

Tuesday starts off with high pressure over the region and sees a weather system approach in the afternoon. That’s going to give us W 13-16 in the morning from Stevenson to Mosier. Models predict a midday drop, followed by a period of stronger wind in the afternoon. That afternoon bump is likely in result of the approaching weather system, which means the wind is going to be a bit on the gusty and unreliable side. That said, we’ll likely see 20-23 in the afternoon at Stevenson, Mosier and the Rowena stretch, with the Swell-Hood River stretch seeing gusty 15-18.

Wednesday looks like light westerlies, less than 10, probably less than 5, to start the day. The wind will pick up in the afternoon to W 7-11 from Stevenson to Doug’s.

Jones beach looks like 20-23 today, nothing tomorrow, and 20-23 on Wednesday. Sauvie’s looks like 7-11 today, nothing tomorrow, and 7-11 on Wednesday. Coast (north/central/south) today: 10-15/10-15/30-35, W swell 10′ at 13 seconds. Tomorrow: light and variable, NW 6 @ 11. Wednesday: 15-20/20-25/25-30, W 8@12.

Random Morning Thoughts

Grad school is an interesting project to take on. I find that I could spend, if I wanted, every free minute of my time studying. Because of this, I’m having to learn how to balance the fun of studying (I love the topic) and the fun of playing in the woods or on the water. This, I suspect, is a struggle many of us encounter.

American culture tells us to keep moving, keep working, and keep on keeping on. A little nagging guilt can arise when we give ourselves the gift of down time or play time. It’s important, then, to check in when we’re taking a work break or study break. Are we really 100% committed to this time being about fun, or are we putting a lot of effort in to make the most of it?

It’s a subtle difference, but an important one. The more we let go of everything else and let ourselves enjoy our play time, the more it will refresh us. Speaking of, this is almost enough work for today… I need to sneak in a couple laps on Float On! before school. Have an awesome day!

It’s partly cloudy this morning, and that’ll probably be the cast for much of the day today, with clear sky tonight. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and the low 60’s this afternoon. Moderate wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Tuesday looks sunny in the morning with cloudy in the afternoon and evening. There’s a very slight chance of a few sprinkles on Tuesday night. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. No rainbows. Wednesday looks mostly cloudy with a very slight chance of a few sprinkles in the morning. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the mid 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 3% chance of rainbows. Road and Mountain Biking

I’m sitting here trying to bust out a forecast because I hear Post Canyon calling my name. I know there’s perfect dirt in there (and at other places: Syncline, Nestor, Whoopdee, Oak Ridge, Gorge 400 and Kitchen Sink, Siouxon, Falls Creek to the Horse Camp), and I want some of it before I make my way to Portland to pick up my friend’s iPhone (and go to school). You too may want to get in a ride today, assuming you like BROWN POW. Road biking will be windy today and tomorrow, but Wednesday’s lining up to be a light wind (ride to school?) kind of day. If you’d like to give back to your trails, the HRATS have a work party in Post Canyon on Sunday morning. Mark your calendar.

Upcoming Events

Today’s events include free Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1, by-donation yoga at Yoga Samadhi at 6, pickup basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, and community Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6:30. Tomorrow is officially Awesome Day in Portland, so we might as well make it Awesome Day all day here too, so do something awesome. My suggestion would be for you to join the Pacific Hermitage monastics at Yoga Samadhi tomorrow night at 6:30 for community meditation. That’s definitely something awesome, and since I have class tomorrow night, you’ll have to go for me.

Coming up next Saturday, there’s the pond skim at Meadows, a youth fishing clinic at Mayer Park, a garden party at Pacific Hermitage, and the Fly Fishing Film Tour in The Dalles. On Sunday, it’s the Bear Springs Trap mountain bike race and a trail work party in Post Canyon.

Have an awesome day today!
