Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Wednesday looks a bit more interesting than Monday and Tuesday, if actual weather falls into the “interesting” category for you. I mean… sunshine is actual weather, but it’s static, requiring less though on the part of this forecaster.
Wednesday starts off with a quick shot of rain on the mountain, quickly turning sunny by mid-morning and staying that way for the rest of the day. The snow level will be 10,000′ early, 9000′ right after the rain moves through, and 13,000′ in the afternoon. We’ll see .2-.4” of rain between 3am and 7am with a slight chance of rainbows at sunrise. Wind on Wednesday will be SW 25 early, rading to S 10 in the afternoon.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, finished
Thursday looks sunny and warm. The free air freezing level will be around 13,000′, leading to 5000′ temps in the low 50’s. The wind on Thursday will be out of the SSW at 10-15. The next two systems in the long-range models are Friday midday and Sunday evening. Both systems look to bring .5-1.0” of rain to Mt. Hood with the snow level at the way-too-high range.
Winter Companion Rescue Series – Hood River
Winter Companion Rescue Series is targeted to those who travel in avalanche terrain. These sports take us far from help and into terrain that is high reward and high risk. You will learn basic use of your beacon, probe, and shovel. The rescue portion will follow American Avalanche Association guidelines for companion rescue. When an avalanche buries your backcountry partner, acting fast and knowing what to do will save a life. You will be taught American Heart First Aid and CPR/AED skills for remote wilderness settings. November 8 & 9 at 2nd Wind. $94. https://heiko-stopsack-gfb7.squarespace.com/winter-companion-rescue-series

Random Morning Thoughts
Many people seem to have decided to sit out this election due to dissatisfaction with the choices at the top of the ticket. I’d like to remind all of you that the “choose one for president” is just one section of your ballot. You can opt out of the presidential race while still choosing down-ballot candidates, voting for or against propositions, and participating in local elections.
Like many things in life, there are nuances to voting. Like many times in life, we forget this. We view voting as an all-or-nothing proposition. Either you fill out all those little bubbles or you don’t fill out any at all. Feel free to let some of those bubbles drift away on the wind without popping them. Leave some circles blank, and fill in those circles which matter to you.
Your mother would tell you to vote because there are starving children all over the United States who don’t have the right to vote. (Our child poverty rate is horrifyingly high for a developed country, btw.) I’m not your mother. I’m telling you to fill out as many of those bubbles (or pull levers or push buttons) as you can. While your vote may feel inconsequential among the hundreds of millions of votes, it can still make a difference, especially in your local races. Vote early. Vote once. Vote, damnit. Have an awesome day.
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
Gorge Weather Forecast
High clouds are filling the sky on this Monday morning as a weak warm front passes over the area. Strong high pressure will build in behind this weather system, leading to sunshine this afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. There’s a 50-50 chance Tuesday will start out with the Nothing, but we’ll have sunshine in the afternoon and clouds overnight. Temps will be in the low 40’s early and the low 60’s this afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Wednesday may start with some showers or the rain may not make it past Cascade Locks. Either way, there will be plenty of sunshine in the afternoon. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. 63% chance of morning rainbows.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
If you go mountain biking today, you will find delicious tacky dirt. The dirt will be tackiest at Syncline and Whoopdee, but I suspect you’ll find tacky dirt on the sandier 44 Road trails too. Post will be a mixed bag, I suspect, with some spots still just a little too slick. Road biking looks good for the next three days with zero rain, light wind, and sunshine for at least parts of each day.
Upcoming Events
It’s Monday, and there’s meditation at Trinity Natural Medicine at noon. That’s followed by Tai Chi at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 1pm. There’s a walking happiness group that leaves One Community Health in The Dalles at 5pm, there’s Kickball at Daubenspeck Park at 6, free yoga at Samadhi at 6, Pickup Basketball at the Mt. Hood Town Hall at 6:30, free Zumba at St. Francis House in Odell and at the Parkdale Community Center, and YogaFaith (Christ-centered yoga) at Pure Yoga in The Dalles at 6:45.
Coming up tomorrow evening, there’s a Winter Companion Rescue Series at 2nd Wind. This two-day seminar (I believe there’s also a field practice session later) will teach you the basics of how to keep yourself and your friends safe in the backcountry as well as what to do if something Bad does happen. The cost is $94, well worth it if you plan to spend time skiing away from the resorts.
Coming up Thursday, it’s “Rooted”, a story slam with tales from our local community. You can catch the show at Columbia Center for the Arts at 6pm. The annual Gorge Gear Swap, also known as the Ski Swap, is at HRVHS on Saturday the 19th. That same day brings a work party in Post Canyon.
Have an awesome day today!
