Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s quite windy in the western Gorge this morning as a gradient of E .21 powers the easterlies. It’s even blowing 25 at Viento, according to iWind/iKite’s brand new sensor. For today, you can expect 35-40 at Rooster, 30-35 at Steven’s Locks, and 20-25 near Viento with lesser easterlies as you go further east. The wind will last all day. Keep an eye open for debris in the river. Saturday looks lik eE 35-40 at Rooster in the morning (25-30 Stevenson, 15-20 Viento) with east 10-15 in the afternoon. Sunday starts with calm wind and builds to E 20-25 in the afternoon. Monday and Tuesday bring stronger easterlies.

Random Morning Thoughts

I was at the meditation group in White Salmon last night, and the teacher was talking about … well, he was talking about a lot of profound things … but I was really struck by the idea that we strive and put out effort to control our experience in meditation.

The cushion is not the only place we do this. Duh. Having control is a safety and security issue for us. Unconsciously, we think that if we can control our lives (and the people around us), life will be more predictable. The problem with this is that controlling everything around us is an impossibility. When we try, we become more and more rigid, and we become less happy.

We can only control ourselves.

Here’s the funny thing: because humans exist in systems, changing our own behaviors will change (some of) the behaviors of the people around us and the communities in which we participate. Using that as our motivation to change is problematic for reasons I won’t go into (speculate if you wish!). However, if we can harness that understanding and use it to motivate ourselves to be kinder, more loving, and to set better boundaries, others will do the same.

Huh. That was not where I was expecting this reflection to go, but that’s where we ended up. Change yourself. That will change the systems you are in. You’ll feel safer in the world, and you’ll find yourself striving for control less often. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist, but could be if you have Apple Health or can cash pay and come to Comprehensive Healthcare in White Salmon. I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The sky is clear pre-sunrise as I write this, but that’s no guarantee some Nothing won’t move in for a bit this morning. We’ll see sunshine the rest of the day with temps in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s this afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks just like today. Sunday will almost certain start with a Nothing, but the sun will return in the afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. Lighter easterlies. No rainbows. Keep an eye on the first week of November – the GFS and Euro are both hinting at the possibility of very cold weather with the potential for lowland snow in the second half of the week. That would be very early for lowland snow, so don’t get too excited.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s clear over Hood River, but there’s Nothing to the east. Probably a good chance of clouds this morning with high clouds and filtered sun this afternoon. Light rain west of Hood River. Temps will be in the Upper 30’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. Moderate west wind. 1% chance of rainbows. Thursday will probably start with Nothing and turn sunny. Temps will be in the mid 40’s early and mid 60’s in the afternoon. East wind. No rainbows. Same exact thing for Friday.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

The dirt is perfect everywhere according to Strava ride titles. One thing to note is a controlled burn on Burdoin Mountain that may have some trails closed (Millenium comes to mind). There are also closed trails in upper Post Canyon due to impacts from the Eagle Creek Fire. There’s a work party on the Pine Mont trail system on Saturday.

Upcoming Events

There are all sorts of events happening as part of Gorge Happiness Month, more than I care to type out.

Today’s “Happiness” challenge is to try to get someone to really laugh. You could try this at the Kickstand Coffee run at 7am, where jogging or walking 4 miles gets you a cup of coffee and a donut. There’s a trail work party at Pinemont tomorrow (310 trail) and the Pumpkin Run is Sunday in North Bonneville.

Have an awesome day today!
