Gorge Wind Forecast
Something very different is happening in the Great Outdoors this morning. Clouds. Clean air. Drizzle to the west. This, of course, will affect today’s weather. Western Gorge clouds continue through the weekend, with rain likely Sunday. Expect to do some driving eastward to find wind the next few days.
For Friday, the morning cloudline was past Hood River, but that didn’t stop the gradients: .10 pdx-dls and .11 dls-psc. Offshore high pressure combines with a trough of low pressure to the west and sunshine in the desert for another windy day. Weak weather systems swinging through today will likely decrease reliability. So, for this morning, we started with speeds all over the map, strongest east of The Dalles (and Viento, which is windy all the time, no matter the weather). As the sun arises to stabilize things, we’ll see 13-16 under the clouds, 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus, and a fade to 18-23 east of John Day Dam. Given the gradients, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see 27-30 from Lyle to Rufus this afternoon. Will Swell and Hood River get windy? Depends on the clouds. No clouds: 24-27. Clouds: 13-16.
Clouds Saturday morning burn back in the afternoon, but a prediction of afternoon high clouds does not bode well for the wind quality. We start the day with extensive western Gorge clouds and wind at 13-16 to The Dalles with 7-10 out east. The wind will build to gusty 17-20 from Stevenson to Hood River with 24-27 from Mosier to Rufus. Arlington’s a zero on Saturday. If the clouds burn back enough, the wind will pick up to 24-27 from Viento to Swell also.
Sunday’s marine layer looks massive: 10,000′ deep, causing rain in the western Gorge. It’s a bit unclear how far east the clouds will go. Same goes for the rain; NW upper flow will contribute to rain shadowing. Anyway, details aside, we’ll start with 7-10 everywhere and build to 24-27 from The Dalles to Three Mile. With rain a possibility in the western Gorge, let’s go with 12-15 all day from Stevenson to Mosier. Models like the idea of 13-16 Monday and east wind at 15-25 on Tuesday.
BONUS: Jones Friday: 12-15. Saturday: 5-8. Sunday: rainy. Sauvie’s Friday: 10-13. Saturday: 10-13. Sunday: rainy. Coast (north/central/south). Friday: LTW/N5-10/25-30+, NW swell 4′ at 7 seconds. Saturday: LTW/5-10/25-30+, NW 4′ @ 7. Sunday: SW 10-15/NW 5/N 25-30, NW 7′ @ 9.
Random Morning Thoughts
Pine Street Bakery hosted a meet n’ greet yesterday with Greg Walden’s challenger. During the question and answer session, we touched upon something I come across in my work: what it’s like to live in poverty. Everyone who is reading this forecast has more resources than many of my clients. A cup of coffee or the bridge toll is out of reach for many of them.
This is problematic for many reasons which I’m going to set aside for now. I do want to touch upon the fact that most of us do not have a visceral sense of what it’s like to live in poverty, to not have jobs available, to not have the money to move to a place with jobs (where rent may be unaffordable), to have an illness (mental or physical) that interferes with the ability to work. When we don’t have a lived sense of this struggle, it leads to us (and politicians) making policies that aren’t realistic.
Let’s take one example: it costs $725 to become a citizen of the USA. While that may seem like small change to some of you, it feels prohibitively expensive to many others. Gathering together that kind of money can take years, and in the process, it might be needed for medical bills, the electric bill, car repairs, etc.
Poverty is a life of prioritization and risk management. Is it better to pay the electric bill or to buy school supplies? Is it worth the risk of driving without insurance so you can afford food?
If we can understand what this is like, we (citizens and politicians) can make decisions and policies that actually work. This is important for our daily lives too, as it allows us to build compassion and understanding for people in situations different than ours. If you’ve got a few minutes, reflect on this a bit. Just for fun. And then wallow in gratitude for what you do have. May your life be filled with abundance. Have an awesome day.
