Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)
Yesterday was windy, and today shall be windy too, as a trough of low pressure moves east over the Northwest this afternoon. The dynamic nature of this setup isn’t ideal, but we’ll still see a very windy day on the river. As of 7am, the low clouds were past Hood River, indicating a drive might be warranted for the best wind. However, models do suggest the wind will die off out east this afternoon, meaning the hurry-up-and-wait approach won’t hurt today. With gradients of .15 (pdx-dls), .08 (dls-psc) and .61 (eph-dls), we are set up for a good day.
Expect up-and-down 21-25 from Swell to Arlington for the first half of the morning with 13-16 from Stevenson to Swell. As the trough moves east and the temps start to warm, we’ll see the wind pick up to 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus. Swell and Hood River are a bit tricky today, as they tend to suffer from weather dynamics. You’ll find periods of good wind there today, most likely late morning to early afternoon, but you’ll be better off at the Lyle-Doug’s stretch of river. Same goes for Maryhill: periods of good wind interspersed with gusty periods. The wind east of Rufus will likely jump into the upper 20’s for a bit today before fading to the upper teens.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.
Get it today, because we’re going easterly tomorrow with 16-19 at Steven’s Locks and Rooster’s Rocks. Sunday starts off with east 10-13, goes calm midday, and switches to W 10-13 late in the afternoon.
Models past Sunday aren’t agreeing (due to active weather in the Pacific). It looks like we’ll see westerlies of some sort to start next week, but the strength, reliability, and location are in question.
Coast (north/central/south). Today: 10-15/10-15/30+, NW swell 6′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: 20-25/20-25/depends on various factors, likely 10-15, NW 4′ @ 8 seconds. Sunday: 15-20/15-20/light, NW 5′ @ 8 seconds.
Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 21-24. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Sunday, 23-26. Sauvie’s today, 8-11. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 10-13. Sauvie’s Sunday, 10-13.

Random Morning Thoughts
Something came up in an email yesterday that got me thinking about communication. Imagine that – me, thinking about communication. How surprising! Anyway, when we want to know about someone’s reasons for doing something, we often offer a reason. For example, “You didn’t answer my texts. Are you mad at me?”
When we combine two issues (what we’re curious about and our interpretation of someone’s actions), we complicate communication. We’re likely to upset or confuse the other party with our interpretation of their actions. And that can derail conversations.
If we simplify our communication, we’ll have cleaner interactions. Instead of sharing our interpretation of someone’s actions, we can just ask: “Hey, I’m curious why you didn’t answer my texts?” We’re likely to get a simpler answer, such as, “I’ve been busy,” or “I got them while I was driving and spaced replying,” or maybe even, “I’m pissed at you. Wanna talk?”
So, try this for a while. Just ask the question. Leave off the interpretation. See what happens in your interactions. Maybe something awesome will unfold.

Upcoming Events
This morning at 7am, long before I managed to get you the forecast, happy joggers were at Kickstand Coffee for the group jog. 4.1 miles of jogging or walking earns all who show up a cup of coffee and a donut. In other news today, there are lots of paddlers in town for the Gorge Paddle Challenge, and Big Winds has a not-free shuttle service to drop you off at Viento. Coming up this evening, Cascade Locks Movies in the Park shows the movie Frozen at dusk, and the Seahawks play the Chiefs at 5pm.
The Gorge Paddle Challenge is tomorrow and Sunday at the Waterfront Park, and they’ll have free SUP demos and lessons. Oregon State Parks has the “Let’s Go Bike Touring” event at the Twin Tunnels trailhead tomorrow morning, Riverkeeper has a cleanup on the Columbia at 10am at Riverfront Park in The Dalles, and Meadows has the Uphill Challenge. Tomorrow evening is the movie Despicable Me 2 at Jackson Park in Hood River, and there’s a stargazing party at Timberline Lodge tomorrow night.
Have an awesome day today!
