Good morning,

I think NOAA is pretty much right on with their call for light freezing rain this afternoon into this evening. As a matter of fact, I think they’re so right on that I’m going to pass on going to Portland today and now have to find something equally fun to do. Maybe I can go to The Dalles instead! It’s going to be cloudy today, and then around 4pm, we’ll see some very light freezing rain, continuing through 4am. Total precip shouldn’t be more than .1”, but freezing rain is freezing rain, and it’s probably best to stay off I-84 tonight. NOAA is right on with this, but they haven’t yet mentioned the strong possibility of another round of freezing rain through the Gorge on Saturday. It’s a long ways out to make a solid call, but take it into consideration when making your weekend plans. Also of note is the strong potential for no Nothing layer on Saturday morning, leaving us under high clouds and brighter light.

If you’re one of those Nordic folks, or you’d like to be, Sunday is Teacup’s annual XC party, with snacks and cocoa and tea and free skiing and $10 lessons (free if you’re a member). Register for lessons at 9:30. Fun starts at 10:30.

Up on Mt. Hood, the ski slopes are just going to see snow today, as they’ll be above the above-freezing layer of air. The snow level today will be around 4000′, with the air warming above freezing between 1500′ and 3500′ this evening. Snow starts around 4pm, for .1-.2” of water value for 1-2” of snow in the evening. Wind today will be S 15-25 early, rising to SW 35 in the afternoon.

Snow flurries continue Friday morning, with the snow level at 4000′ mid-morning, and 6000′ in the afternoon. Another .1-.2” WV falls between 4am and 10am, for 1-2” of new, after which skies become clear. Wind on Friday will be W 30 early, W 15 mid-morning and light and variable in the afternoon.

Saturday morning brings high clouds. Snow flurries start around 1pm, however, models are all over the place with precipitation amounts. It looks like we’ll see snow through 4am Sunday, but let’s just call it .1-.3” WV at this point, 2-3” of new. Wind on Saturday will be SW 15-25 all day.

Sunday starts off with flurries, becoming partly cloudy. Heavier snowfall moves in during the evening, but long-range models are suggesting a switch to rain overnight into Monday. Hard to tell this far out, with even Saturday’s models showing variation.

Have an awesome day today!

It looks like the low clouds have moved up in elevation a bit today, which is better than low clouds sitting right over White Salmon. I really thought the gloom might dissipate today, but now I’m not so sure. Anyway, it’s going to stay right around freezing in the Gorge today, with an E .29 gradient giving us 40-50mph east wind at Rooster Rock.

If you want to see the sun, you can probably find it in the windy zone: it was gorgeous and sunny at the Cascade Locks easyCLIMB trail yesterday. Tomorrow looks like a better chance of clear sky in the Gorge, at least in the morning, before high clouds and and a tenth or two of an inch of freezing rain move in around midday, continuing through early evening. It’s possible the precip will fall as snow, but likelier it will fall as freezing rain.

Friday looks like a better chance of sun in the Gorge, but the gloom returns on Saturday. Back to the freezing waterfalls: it sounds like the small waterfalls have lots of ice, but not the big waterfalls… yet…

If you’d really like to find sun, it’s above you, at the ski resorts.

Today looks sunny on Mt. Hood, with above-freezing temps between 3000′ and 9000′. Wind will be S10 in the morning and S 20 in the afternoon, with no precipitation.

Thursday starts off clear on the mountain, becoming cloudy midday with a bit of rain moving in, then switching to snow between 10am and 7pm, with a total of .1-.3” water value. Or maybe we’ll get really lucky with all snow, all the time, in which case we’ll get 2-3” of new. The likelier story is mixed precip.Temps will be above freezing in the 3000-8000′ bubble to start, and then the freezing level will fall to 1000′ overnight. Wind on Thursday will be S 30 in the morning, SSW 30 midday and SW 25 in the evening, becoming W 20 overnight.

Friday looks sunny, with the freezing level at 1000′ early and 6000′ later, with a developing inversion overnight giving us above-freezing temps from 3000′ to 9000′. Wind on Friday will be W 15 early becoming light and variable midday.

Saturday looks sunny on the mountain with above-freezing temps between 3000′ and 8000′ with SW wind at 15 or so. High clouds move in during the afternoon.

Have an awesome day today!
