Wow. What a day it was yesterday. First, as soon as I sent the forecast complaining about Santa and the rain, my wet Christmas switched to white Christmas. So that was great. Second, I went skiing and the snow was incredible. Despite dire predictions of warming and heavy snow by yours truly, the snow stayed light and the warming held off until late in the evening. It’s was 27 at Meadows as of 5am, so it finally did get warmer, but most of the snow fell during the cold period. Hooray! So, Doug, I’m glad I was wrong and you had a great day on the hill!

For those of you in the Upper Valley and other areas of the Gorge where it’s still snowing, hang in there. This east gradient isn’t going anywhere until Thursday morning, so it looks like you’ll keep seeing snow today. Another 3-4” is probably reasonable in the next 24 hours for Odell and Parkdale and other places above 500′. Unfortunately, it looks like the snow is going to stick around, with the freezing level at 1000′ Thursday, 500′ Friday and at the surface on Saturday. At least we’ll only see flurries on Thursday and Friday and Saturday during the day. Next chance for a couple inches of snow in the Gorge is Saturday night.

For you windsurfers and kiters, you’ll have easterlies at 20-25 at Stevenson and Rooster today. Tomorrow afternoon brings gusty westerlies at 21-24 east of Hood River.

Today is the last of the dumping snow days for a bit. Although it’s 27 at Meadows as of the time of this forecast, the snow level is around 500′, at least in the Gorge, where east gradients are keeping it cool. The temp should hold in the mid-twenties at 5000′ today, before getting colder tonight. We’ll see .4-.5” water value (WV) by 4pm, for 4-5” of new. Another .4-.5” WV falls by 4am Thursday, for another 4-5”. Wind today will be SSW 10-20 early, going to SW 10-15 at 1pm.

Thursday starts with flurries and the snow level at 1000′. There will be less than 1” of new snow during the 24 hour period. The sky will become partly cloudy to clear around 10am. Wind will be NW 10-15.

Friday starts off clear, becoming cloudy midday. The snow level will be around 500′. Flurries start around 4pm, lasting through midnight, for .1-.2” WV and a trace to 2” of new. Wind will be S 10-15 early, going to SSW 15 in the afternoon.

Saturday starts off with broken clouds, becoming clear by 1pm. After 4pm, clouds increase, and flurries start around 7pm for a couple inches of new by Sunday morning. Wind will be NW 15-20 all day. Sunday looks partly cloudy with a few flurries. The extended models are now leaning toward snow, rather than clearing. I think we’ll just have to wait a few days and see what they conclude.

Have an awesome day today!

Christmas

Thursday

I’m not very happy with Santa right now. I asked for Snowpocalypse, and sure, it’s happening on the Heights, but down here at my house, it’s 33 and raining. I wanna go sledding on 7th Street!!! Alas. I guess I’ll go powder skiing. Pick me up if you see me hitching, okay?

Anyway, the easterly gradient is only supposed to increase through noon, so maybe, just maybe it will pull enough cold air in for snow down to the freeway, but with temps at 33 in The Dalles, I’m not sure… It is snowing at Chenowith and in the Heights as of 6am, so I’m crossing my fingers. A white Christmas at my house would be way more fun than a wet Christmas! No matter what it does at my house, the Heights can expect 3-6” and Parkdale/Odell can expect 6-12”. Wherever you are, if it’s below freezing now, don’t expect it to switch to rain until tomorrow morning, at the earliest. However, there is a slight chance of that snow switching to freezing rain after 4pm today.

For those of you cold-tolerant enough to handle, easterlies blow at 25-35 at Stevenson and 30-40 at Rooster today, and the easterlies continue through tomorrow morning. Tomorrow afternoon brings gusty westerlies at 22-25 east of Hood River. Thursday brings west wind at 15-18.

On to the Mt. Hood forecast. If you like fresh snow, today is your day. The snow level is currently about 500′, with cold temps on the hill. Those temps will climb to the mid- to upper twenties today, so the snow is going to get heavier. Around 4pm, the snow level will be around 4000′, although it’ll be right around 31-33 degrees all the way down to the surface in the Gorge. For now, though, it’s light powder on Mt. Hood. Total precip today will be 1.5-2.0” water value (WV) for 15-20” of new snow by 4pm. Another .1-.2” WV falls overnight for 1-3” more. Wind today is light now, but will pick up to SSW 20-30 by 7am, SSW 30-40 by 10am and going to SW 30-40 this afternoon, holding through the evening.

Snow starts up again around 4am Wednesday, with the snow level at 2500′. About .4” WV falls between 4am and 4pm, for 4-6” of new. Another .4” WV falls overnight for 4-6”. Wind Wednesday will be SW 15 early becoming WNW 15-25 by 10am and WNW 30-40 by 4pm.

Thursday starts with flurries, becoming flurries mixed with sunbreaks. Total precip will be .1-.2” WV in the morning, for 1-3” of new snow. The snow level will be 1500′, dropping to 1000′. Wind Thursday will be NW 30-40 early, dropping to 20-25 by 10am and 10-15 in the evening.

Friday looks clear in the morning with high clouds in the afternoon with no accumulation and light wind. After Friday, the weather looks dry through the middle of next week. Models suggest temps will remain cold on Mt. Hood through Sunday, meaning the snow will stay packed powder and awesome for at least that long.

Have an awesome day today!
