Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

It’s not windy this morning, by any stretch of the imagination, except perhaps if you’re a small bug trying to cling to a blade of grass in a location affected by the Venturi effect (the Gorge, by the way, is an example of the gap wind effect, not the Venturi effect). If you are not a bug, but a human, you’re looking at light wind this morning as high pressure sits over the PNW. An approaching upper level low this afternoon will bump the wind up to 13-16 from Steven’s Locks (hooray for the sailboat races) to Mosier, perhaps to The Dalles.

Tomorrow sees an upper level low at the coast, a setup not seen yet this summer. Although a coastal ULL sends marine clouds into the PNW, it collapses the synoptic-scale gradients, leading to less steady Gorge wind. That said, you can expect 18-22 from Hood River east to Arlington tomorrow morning with gusty, up-and-down 24-27 in the afternoon, likely strongest and steadiest from Rowena to Rufus with less wind near (likely cloudy) Steven’s Locks and HR.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Sunday’s a bit tricky as clouds, possible showers, afternoon thunder, and off-river rainbows affect the wind. Expect W 5-10 early with gusty 17-20 in the afternoon east of Mosier. As of right now, Monday looks very windy (not sure I’m buying it) and Tuesday looks like moderate westerlies.

Coast forecast (north/central/south). Today: 5-10/5-10/25-30, NW swell 4′ @ 9 seconds. Tomorrow: Light and variable (LTV), W 4 @ 9. Sunday: LTV, W 4 @ 8.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 22-25. Jones tomorrow, 10-13. Jones Sunday, 10-13. Sauvie’s today, 9-12. Sauvie’s tomorrow, LTV. Sauvie’s Sunday, LTV.

Random Morning Thoughts

I had something important and somewhat troubling on my mind for the last few days, and I was having trouble keeping that thing out of my thoughts. I find this interesting, because worrying and rumination does a person no good, and I’m interested in doing good by myself. It’s my hope that you too are interested in doing good by you!

I have this theory that something gets stuck in our heads and we get stuck in an endless loop because we aren’t seeing the underlying problem. For example, say I have a conflict at work and people aren’t communicating with me. I might obsess over how we can better communicate, or I might obsess over how I’ve been wronged, or I might obsess over how they forgot to invite me to the office party.

And the rumination goes on and on without resolution. Perhaps that happens because what I’m really worried about is losing my job and the impact that’ll have on my ability to support my family. That possibility is too scary to contemplate, so I focus on other things. The real issue (job loss, perhaps) avoids my attention and doesn’t get resolved, leaving me to endlessly spiral around essentially trivial concerns.

So I say… when you’re stuck in an endless thought loop, ask yourself what you’re really worried about. Ask what underlies all the other concerns. Figure that out, and you’ll understand yourself better. Self-understanding will help set you free from the endless worry spiral, freeing your mind to focus on happier, more productive thoughts and emotions. May your day be awesome and worry-free!

Road and Mountain Biking

In truly delightful biking news, there’s a decent chance of rain coming up this weekend, especially over the higher elevations. It’s going to take a lot of rain to change things from dusty to tacky, but maybe, just maybe, we’ll see some change from this upcoming weather pattern. In the meantime, this morning looks epic for road biking with cool temps and light wind. Sunday morning also looks light, but it may be rainy. Or at least cloudy. In other bike news – if you have a used bike you no longer need, email me and I’ll help get it to a kid in need and get you a tax writeoff.
