Thursday. It’s summer!

This is going to be a quick wind forecast today, I’m afraid, because there isn’t going to be all that much in the way of wind for the next few days. If you’re desperate for wind, check out the beta test coast forecast below. We do have a little bit of marine clouds in Portland…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

If you’re desperate for wind, check out the beta test coast forecast below. We do have a little bit of marine clouds in Portland this morning, and that will help the desert get a head start in the heat. That might allow for a little more wind than the models suggest. Considering they’re suggesting zero wind, that’s something… Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

So, expect pretty much no wind at all for much of the day, given the .02 (pdx-dls) gradient at 7am. Late in the day, we may see just a little west wind in the western Gorge. By western Gorge today, I mean from Rooster to (maybe) Stevenson. Maybe we’ll see westerlies at 10-13 down there. Everywhere else, you can expect light wind, unless we get really, really lucky and see 10-13 late at Swell.

Friday looks even lighter. You can expect light and variable wind on Friday everywhere, all day long. There will be no westerlies and no easterlies. Or just some very light westerlies and some very light easterlies. It’ll be perfect for wakeboarding, flat water SUPing, paddling around in a kayak, whitewater boating, etc.

Saturday starts off just as light as Friday. You know, light and variable. As the thermal trough shifts eastward late in the day, we’ll see the west wind pick up. It’ll probably hit 13-16 from Stevenson to Hood River late in the day. For a more exact forecast, we’ll have to wait a day or two. The wind will climb overnight, giving us 24-27 to start the day on Sunday, with 28-32 in the afternoon. Strongest wind Sunday will be from Swell to Rufus.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

There will be snow on the ground at Mt. Hood today, and every day until the glaciers completely melt away.

Random Morning Thoughts

We’re going to take a break from philosophy and reflection this morning. Why? Because meteors are more awesome than personal exploration. Okay, maybe equally awesome. Our mind-body is filled with as much as excitement as a meteor shower, right?

Anyway, tonight is the peak of the Perseids, and they’re supposed to be extra-awesome this year. Meteor experts are predicting up to 200 meteors per hour streaking across the northeastern sky. I should mention, since I said “streaking”, that meteor showers are fit for children to see. Meteors move too fast when streaking for anyone to see their nether parts.

Anyway, the best show will be between midnight and dawn, away from light pollution, and after the moon sets. If you want to watch with other people, there are stargazing parties tomorrow night (after the peak, but still plenty of meteors) at Rooster Rock and Goldendale Observatory.

That is all I have to say. Meteors are awesome. So are you. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Tomorrow looks hot and sunny with temps in the upper 50’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows. Saturday looks hot and sunny too, with temps in the mid 60’s early and the low 90’s in the afternoon. Light wind, no rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Everything is open as far as I know, although Boulder Lakes is rumored to have some trees down. Whoopdee is closed due to logging. All trails on Kreps and SDS lands will close on August 13th due to fire season. That means Hospital Hill, East Ridge, and Whoopdee, which will be doubly closed.

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events include a free yoga class at the Fish Food Bank at 10. That’s followed this evening by ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5, the women’s Post n’ Pinot bike ride at Dirty Fingers at 5:30, Sailboat Races at the Hood River Marina at 6, and Zumba at the Parkdale Community Center at 6. If you want to watch Olympic soccer on the big screen tonight, go to Jackson Park. This event is by donation benefiting HRVHS soccer. Food will be available for purchase. Starts at 8pm.

Tonight looks clear as a bell, and that’s great news for the peak of the Perseid Meteor shower – watch the northeastern sky after midnight for the best show.

Looking ahead to this weekend, the movie Up shows at Cascade Locks Marine Park Friday night, and Cinderella shows at Jackson Park in Hood River Saturday night. Mt. Hood Meadows has a geocache race on Saturday. The Journey Tribute Band Stone in Love plays in the Dalles on Saturday night, and there are drag races in Dallesport at the airport on Sunday.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
