Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Random Morning Thoughts

It’s dark. I want the sun to come up so I can go windsurfing before the wind dies. Come on sun!

Cool local business – please support them!

There are some businesses that are just plain awesome. Dirt Hugger is one. Too much food waste at your business or municipality? Dirt Hugger will take it away! All that food waste becomes food-for-your-garden compost. Temira’s guerilla garden agrees: Dirt Hugger compost is the best! Pick it up or have it delivered. Wind guessings, prognosticatings and musings

Sometimes I’m amazed when I wake up and my prediction has become reality. Given the calm wind yesterday evening, I was having a hard time believing today would bring strong westerlies. But iWind/iKite reported 28mph at Swell at 7am with a PDX-DLS gradient of .17, along with another .08 out east. Seeing as how it was pitch black as I was writing this forecast, I’m not sure of the location of the cloud line, but I’m going to ignore any clouds and take that 28 by the reins.

Expect 26-30+ this morning from Hood River to The Dalles with a little less further east. If I were you, I wouldn’t drive, as the models show the wind fading later today, especially after 2pm.

High pressure takes control again tomorrow, for east winds at 26-30 at Stevenson and 35-45 at Rooster. Those easterlies die overnight, leaving us with relatively calm wind on Tuesday morning.

Plain old weather

And that wind forecast for Tuesday leads into the first widespread frost alert for the year: With clear sky Monday night coupled with calm wind, expect freezing temps (high 20’s) on Tuesday morning. Actually, there’s a chance of frost on Sunday night as the free air freezing level drops to 1000′, coupled with an inversion through the Gorge, so frost is likely here in Hood River both Monday and Tuesday morning.

Yes, gardeners, it is time to rescue your tomatoes, peppers, and basil, if you haven’t already.

Up on Mt. Hood, the snow level will be around 5500′ today, with an inch or so of new snow at best.

Biking

It doesn’t look like we’ll see enough rain out of today’s system to improve the trail quality. Wednesday, maybe? And be on the lookout for free-thaw mud in exposed locations (Syncline, for example), starting on Monday.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

Today at Dirty Fingers, there’s the “We Hate Cancer” ride at noon – a Post n’ Pint midday lap. Show up. Ride. Get a free beer. Then eat some fundraiser boobie cupcakes nd chicken breasts and buy special limited edition pink and black jerseys. (Not many of those left)

Later this evening, at 4pm, it’s the Vampires and Victims 3k chase/run at HRVHS. Show up in costume. You’ll be assigned to be a vampire or a victim. Victims start first. Vampires chase. $10 if you’re in costume. $15 if you’re not. $5 for kids. Bring a headlamp. Cash prizes for the winners. Hmph. And I thought not getting caught by a vampire and killed would have been enough winning for me. Who needs cash when you’ve just escaped with your life?

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
